PHILIP BOTILLER , BROTHER OF EDWARD, SON OF PHILIP BOTILLER OF WOODHALL, KNIGHT

562 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 1 December 1435. [Wymbyssh].

Regarding his inheritance as brother and heir of Edward, son and heir of Philip Botiller of Woodhall, knight , who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. The lands are in the custody of Hugh Wylughby by letters patent of ‪ Henry VI [compare CFR 1422–30, pp. 281–2]. Inform him of the forthcoming proof of age. [Dorse:] he was informed, attended in person, and made no objections. Date and place of proof given.

The jurors swear that Philip was born at Watton at Stone, baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 years on 29 November last. William Hogge , 64 and more, knows because on the day Philip was born, he was enfeoffed with the tenement in Watton in which he now lives by John Hotoft, esquire , Philip’s godfather, who was seised of it. John Roche , 63 and more, knows because he married Ellen his daughter to John Verdon , still living, on the Sunday before Philip was baptised. William Hoke , 62 and more, knows because Geoffrey his son died on the day Philip was born after a long illness. John Holgyll , 60 and more, knows because Joan his daughter died of plague on the day that Philip was born. Henry Wygge , 65 and more, knows because he was sacristan of the church and held the book before the priest at the baptism. William Olyver , 64 and more, knows because he carried a basin and ewer in front of Philip as he was carried to the church for baptism. Richard Abraham , 68 and more, knows because he married Katherine, still living, the day Philip was born. Thomas Rumpe , 66 and more, knows because he gave water to the godfather(s) and godmother(s) to wash their hands immediately after the baptism. Robert Sawyere , 62 and more, knows because his horse threw him violently to the ground on the day of the baptism, breaking his right shin. William Taillour , 61 and more, knows because he carried two silver pots full of red wine to the church, to refresh the godfathers, godmother(s) and other bystanders. William Stubbe , 65 and more, knows because Walter Mousberd was sent to fetch Margaret, William’s wife, to nurse Philip. Robert Hoberd , 60 and more, knows because he carried a torch in front of Philip as he was carried to the church for baptism.
