HENRY GRENE , SON OF JOHN GRENE, ESQUIRE

561 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 12 December 1435. [Wymbyssh].

Regarding his inheritance as son of John, who held of ‪ Henry VI in chief. The lands are now in the custody of Henry, archbishop of Canterbury , by commission of ‪ Henry VI [CFR 1430–37, p. 154]. Inform the archbishop of the forthcoming proof of age. [Dorse:] he was informed by Henry Penwortham and Thomas Wharff . Date and place of proof given.

The jurors swear that Henry was born at Stepney, baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 years on 6 November last. William Spencer , 66 and more, well recalls because he carried a basin and ewer to the church. John Theyr , 61 and more, well recalls because he carried a lit waxen torch to the church. John Gybbes , 57 and more, well recalls because he carried another lit waxen torch to the church. Thomas Poggere , 62 and more, well recalls because he carried a miller cake for the godfather(s) and godmother(s), with sweet wine to strengthen them. William Stokkesley , 56 and more, well recalls because he rode with Henry’s godfather(s) to the church, and stayed there for the whole baptism. Richard Brok , 50 and more, well recalls because his greyhound killed two of John Noke ’s sheep (oves) outside the churchyard of the church. Simon Cok , 48 and more, well recalls because he married Eleanor his wife, and in the afternoon he came to speak with the rector during the baptism. Richard Laurencis , 63 and more, well recalls because he carried a pair of jugs with sweet wine to the church to refresh the godfather(s) and godmother(s). William Aneston , 53 and more, well recalls because he held a candle at the font. John Danyell , 60 and more, well recalls because he drove 20 young oxen to John Bray ’s house opposite the church. Geoffrey Williamson , 65 and more, well recalls because he, then staying with the lady Joan Banne , was sent by the same lady to the mother of Henry with a new pan, called ‘papp pan’. John Lyncolne , 70 and more, well recalls because he made an offering to St Leonard at the church in fulfilment of a vow previously made.
