JOHN SON OF WILLIAM SHELTON, ESQUIRE

Regarding his inheritance as son of William who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. The lands and tenements are in the custody of Simon Baret, clerk , and Richard Baret , by demise of Edmund Winter and Richard Elswyk to whom Henry V gave custody by letters patent [CPR 1416–1422, p. 413]. Inform them of the forthcoming proof of age.

NORFOLK. Proof of age. East or West Rudham (Rudham) 20 March 1428. [Drury].

Henry Berney , 60, swears that John Shelton was born at Heacham on 4 July 1406, and baptised in the church of St Mary , Heacham, on the same day. He was in the church on that day and saw John raised from the font. He thus knows that John Shelton was aged 21 on 7 July last

(the feast of St Thomas the Martyr last)

and now more. Edward Wylbey , 58, held a lit waxen candle. John Molotes , 56, fetched John Inglisthorp, knight , from Great or Little Walsingham (Walsyngham), to be godfather. John Dawys , 50, fetched master Simon Baret, clerk , from Fakenham, to be godfather. John Wesenham , 57, fetched Joan wife of William Gerbregge, esquire , from Norton to be godmother. William Wroxham , 49, says that John his brother was buried in the churchyard of Heacham church. John Hyche , 45, says that Alice his daughter married Thomas Netherstrete in Heacham church. William Hunte , 56, broke his right shin at Heacham. Thomas Roo , 45, buried his kinswoman, Alice Frebern , at Fakenham. John Farwell , 62, says that Agnes his wife was churched at Heacham following the birth of their son, John. Richard Calbras , 53, says that Thomas Dowe died at Briston. Ralph Smyth , 51, attended the leet court of John, prior of Little Walsingham , at Great or Little Walsingham (Walsyngham).
