THOMAS BROTHER OF JOHN, LORD ROS

Regarding his inheritance as brother of John, Lord Ros , who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. The lands and tenements are in the custody of Ralph Cromwell, chevalier , and Robert Hoton of Sutton upon Derwent in Yorkshire by commission of ‪ Henry VI [CFR 1422–1430, pp. 102–3]. Inform them of the forthcoming proof of age. Issued by petition in Parliament [ CPR 1422–1429, pp. 450–51; Rot. Parl. iv, p. 319].

LINCOLNSHIRE. Proof of age. Stamford 2 December 1427. [Morlay].

Edmund Wylughby of Uffington, esquire , 50 and more, swears that Thomas was born at Belvoir, and baptised in the church of St Mary there on 26 September 1406. His godfathers were Thomas Rempston and Thomas Chauworth , knights, and his godmother was Isabel Berkeley . He was aged 21 on 26 September last. On the day of Thomas’s birth, he was sent by Thomas Rempston , with whom he was then living, to check Belvoir church. He found it adorned with cloths of silk and gold, and the font hung with a cloth of gold decorated in red. He saw John Hamsterlay there, as well as several other servants of William, then Lord Ros . John Hamsterlay said to him, ‘Thomas was with me the night before’. On 26 September last, 21 years had passed and he thus knows Thomas’s age. Hugh May of Uffington, 44 and more, was with Thomas Chauworth, knight , at Wharton and Thomas told him that Lady Ros, deodand, had given birth to a son. Thomas was to lift this son from the font with Thomas Rempston , and he asked Hugh to go with him. Hugh thus saw Thomas raised from the font. Richard Barnby of Great or Little Gonerby (Gunwarby), 60 and more, was betrothed to Isabel his first wife, before master John Southam , commissary of the bishop of Lincoln . He married her the following Sunday. She had been staying with Lord Zouche. John Seyntalbon of Woolsthorpe or Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth (Wolsthorp), 48 and more, says that his first-born son, Alexander, was born on the same day as Thomas and baptised the day following. Alexander Nevyll, chevalier , was godfather. William Hartford of Belvoir, 43 and more, performed homage to William, Lord Ros , for a tenement in Belvoir, and had a letter of homage. John Whytesyde of Stamford, 51 and more, purchased 10 tofts and 6 cottages in Stamford from William Westmeles for £40, payable on the Christmas following. Richard Blovwyn of Stamford, 69 and more, says that the king’s bailiff, John Balle , arrested Norman Dunstan, esquire , at Harlaxton. Norman was suspected of counterfeiting the king’s money and charged to this effect: with the multiplication of silver and gold against the statutes. John Hunte of Grantham, 60 and more, says that Nicholas Whyte , alderman of Grantham, gave a messuage in Grantham and 20 sacks of wool to Edward de Neweport and Agnes his wife who was sister of Nicholas. The gift was witnessed by John Hunte and others. William Stanern of Woolsthorpe or Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth (Wolsthorp), 47 and more, says that John Moyne ’s wife, Ellen, who was sister of William, was buried at Belvoir Priory. He was her executor. William Whyte of Denton, 45 and more, bought 20 a. wood at 40s. the acre from the prior of Haverholme . He has an indenture sealed with the common seal of that house. Richard Gervays of Harlaxton, 49 and more, apprenticed Henry his son to Thomas Nycoll , ‘wolman’ of Grantham, and, before an alderman and others, delivered £20 to Thomas for his son’s use. John Skarlet , 47 and more, was retained by Thomas Rempston, knight , for the term of Thomas’s life, taking 100s. yearly.
