Holdings

She held no lands or tenements of the king in chief in demesne or in service. She held lands and tenements in ?Wyld or Monkton Wyld and Burgh in Dalwood in her demesne as of fee tail by gift of John Strecch and other feoffees, as is clear in a tripartite charter dated at Shute, 6 June 1402 and shown to the jurors. By this charter the lands and tenements were granted to William Bonevylle, knight , now deceased, and Alice his wife and their heirs, remainder to William Bonevylle , son of John Bonevylle , deceased, and his male heirs. Alice died seised of this estate without heir by William Bonevyle her late husband. William Bonevylle son of John, now knight, survives and has right to the tenements by virtue of the gift and remainder, and is aged 30 years and more. The lands and tenements comprise the following.

She was lately seised of the manor of Colway in her demesne as of fee. Long before her death she granted the manor to Thomas Carmynowe, esquire , John Holcote and Walter Lybet , clerks, their heirs and assigns. They are still seised.

John Strecche , Thomas Modeflegh, clerk , and Andrew Rydon were seised in their demesne as of fee of the manor and advowson and granted them to William Bonevile , Alice’s late husband, and Alice, and the heirs of William’s body. William and Alice were seised. William died and Alice held the manor and advowson for life by virtue of the gift and died seised of this estate. William Bonevile, knight , son of John Bonevile , is the kinsman and next heir of her late husband, as son of John Bonevile , his son, and is aged 30 years and more. She held 1/3 manors of Backwell, Stoke Gifford, Saltford, Twerton, Dinder and Lamyatt and 1/3 of 2 messuages in Hallatrow, in dower of the inheritance of Walter Rodenay , son and heir of John son of Walter son of John Rodenay, knight , her late husband, by endowment of this John Rodenay, knight , reversion to Walter the heir, who survives a minor in the wardship of Walter Lord de Hungerford . The manors of Backwell, Stoke Gifford, Saltford and Twerton and the tenements in Hallatrow are held of the earl of Warwick in right of Isabel his wife of the honour of Gloucester, service unknown. Annual values of the manors: Backwell £20; Stoke Gifford £10; Saltford 100s.; and Twerton £10. Annual value of 1/3 of 2 messuages in Hallatrow 5s. The manor of Dinder is held of the bishop of Bath and Wells , service unknown, annual value 100s. One part of the manor of Lamyatt is held of the earl of Hereford ’s heir in socage by 13s. 4d. rent, annual value 40s.; another part is held of the prior of St John of Jerusalem , Templecombe in socage, service unknown, annual value 40s.; and the residual part is held of the bishop of Bath [and Wells] in socage, annual value 20s.

John Strecch , John Passeware, clerk , John Churchille , John Bevyn , Thomas Brokampton , Walter Walissh and Andrew Rydon were lately seised in their demesne as of fee of these manors, lands, tenements and advowsons. They granted them to William Bonevyle, knight , and Alice his wife, by the tripartite indented charter detailed in 620, with the additional successive remainders, if William Bonevyle son of John Bonevyle died without male heirs, to Thomas his brother and his male heirs; to William Bonevyle son of William Bonevyle, knight , and his legitimate male heirs; and to the male heirs of William Bonevyle, knight . If the male heir of William Bonevyle, knight , failed completely, then a moiety remained to Katherine wife of John Wyke and the male heirs of her body, and the other moiety to Elizabeth wife of Thomas Carreu, knight , and the male heirs of her body; remainder to the right heirs of William Bonevyle, knight , each tenant to hold of the chief lords of the fees. William Bonevyle, knight , and Alice were seised and she died seised of this estate. William and Alice died without heir by one another. William Bonevyle son of John Bonevyle survives, aged 30 years and more; he has right to all the manors, lands, tenements and advowsons by virtue of the gift and remainder. She held by grant of Edward Courtenay, late earl of Devon , and Maud his wife, to Alice and William her late husband, described as William Bonevyle, knight , and Alice his wife, for their lives, to hold of, and rendering 34s. 5d. yearly to, the late earl and Maud and the earl’s heirs, successive remainders to the following and their respective male heirs: William son and heir of John Bonevyle ; Thomas brother of William son of John; William son of Thomas son of William Bonevyle, knight ; John brother of William son of Thomas; William son of William Bonevyle, knight ; and then to the heirs of William Bonevyle, knight , to hold as before. Alice held the tenements in this form for life, as is clear in part of a fine shown to the jurors [oct. Mich. 1403, CP 25/1/45/71 no.43]. William Bonevyle and Alice are both dead and William son and heir of John Bonevyle , named in the fine, still survives, aged 30 years and more.
