Inquisition Head

Devon. Proof of age. Exeter. 24 June. [Jaybyn].

John Botour , 5... years and more, says that John was 21 years old on 3 May last and was born at Pinhoe in Devon and baptized in the parish church of Pinhoe on 3 May 1400. He knows because he had a daughter born and baptized that day and came to the church while the parson was baptizing John. He saw the parson write John's age in a missal and asked William Payn , John's godfather, to be his daughter's godfather. The other jurors say the same and know for the following reasons: William Werthe , 53 years and more, says that on that day John's grandfather William Bonevyle, knight , acquired a piece of meadow in Pinhoe from him to hold in fee simple by a charter sealed in the church of Pinhoe in the presence of John Kylryngton , John atte Hylle and others. John Newman , 48 years and more, says that a major dispute between him and William Payn , John's godfather, was resolved by each quitclaiming to the other all personal actions, and that the parson recorded the quitclaim after baptizing John. Laurence Botour , 60 years and more, says that John's grandfather William Bonevyle, knight , summoned him to the parish church, where William invited him to admire the record of John's age in the missal, because his son Alexander acted as William's clerk and wrote his letters and other private business. Richard Whytlok , 55 years and more, spoke with John's father Thomas Bonevyle about a burgage within the south gate of Exeter. Afterwards, while riding with Thomas along a stony lane near Ottery St. Mary , he fell from his horse and broke his right shin, which gave him great pain for a long time afterwards. Ellis Beare , 51 years and more, was asked to act as attorney for John's grandfather William Bonevyle, knight , in the king's court of record at Westminster to recover certain lands and tenements in Woodbury in Devon by writ of formedon in the descender against John Petyt of Barnstaple , for which William gave him 100s. Nicholas Colbroke , 40 years and more, says his son Robert died at about 6 a.m. He went to the church to summon the parson to come and perform Robert's obsequies and saw him baptize John and write his name in a book. John Carswill , 40 years and more, saw a servant of Thomas Bonevyle , John's father, rush to the church and ask who would instruct him to bring flame and water for John's baptism and he said he was prepared to give him the order. William Monk , 60 years and more, says that he sold a horse called `Skottyshgeldyng Swyft for the Nonys' to John's father Thomas and received payment of £10 for it at the church. He saw the parson write John's age in a book kept in the south part of the chancel. William Carswill , 46 years and more, was with Thomas Bonvyle when a man announced John's birth. William told Thomas that his infant son John had died that day and that his wife Beatrice was able to become John's nurse. After John's baptism Thomas gave William a wide striped hood as an inducement for her to take up the duty without delay. John Lymbyry , 40 years and more, and John Forde , 48 years and more, saw the parson baptize John and write his name in a book. They also say that after vespers on the day of John's birth Thomas gave 40s. for the repair of the belfry of the church.
