Long before his death, Roland Barlee , Henry Barlee and Thomas Waltere were seised in demesne as of fee of

a messuage, 4 tofts, 140 a. land, 8 a. meadow, 2 a. pasture, and 50s. rent in Ashwell and Hinxworth
. They demised the same – described as all their lands and tenements in the vills and fields of Ashwell and Hinxworth – to Philip Thornbury, knight , John Fray , Elizabeth Walden , John Barlee , Henry Langle , John Kirkeby , named in the writ, and his late wife Joan, and the heirs and assigns of John Kirkeby . They were seised according to the force and effect of the charter. The charter, dated 19 June 1435, was shown to the jurors. Walter Kyng, junior , and Adam Clement , both of ‘East’ Hatfield, were seised in demesne as of fee of
a tenement, 1 a. land, and a croft adjoining called ‘Chalgrauecrofft’, once Edmund Rodelond’s, in Ashwell.
They granted the above, by charter dated at Ashwell, 4 January 1438, shown to the jurors, to John Barlee , Henry Langle , John Kirkeby , Joan his wife, and the heirs and assigns of John Kirkeby , so that they were seised according to the force and effect of the charter. Long before John’s death Adam Blecche was seised in demesne as of fee of
a parcel of land in Ashwell called ‘Quarrepette’ containing an estimated 6 perches and 12 feet in length and 2 perches and 12 feet in breadth.
He granted the same to to John Barlee , Henry Langle , John Kirkeby , and Joan his wife, and the heirs and assigns of John Kirkeby , so that they were seised according to the force and effect of the charter. Long before John’s death John Broket and John Fyssher were seised in demesne as of fee of
the manor of ‘Gasselyns
and of
all the lands and tenements once of Robert Pomesbournes in Hatfield, Little Berkhamsted, Essendon
and elsewhere in Hertfordshire. By charter shown to the jurors they granted the above to John Fray , Nicholas Dyxon , Henry Langle , John Barlee , John Kirkeby , and the heirs and assigns of John Kirkeby , so that they were seised according to the force and effect of the charter. Long before his death by a deed dated 6 January 1438 shown to the jurors he quitclaimed all the above to John Barlee and Henry Langle and their heirs and assigns. They are still in full possession. Ashwell and Hinxworth,
a messuage, 4 tofts, 140 a. land, 8 a. meadow, 2 a. pasture, and 50s. rent;
a tenement, 1 a. land, and a croft adjoining called ‘Chalgrauecrofft’; and
a parcel of land called ‘Quarrepette’
; truly worth £10 yearly and held of the abbot of St Peter , Westminster , service unknown.
Gasselyns’, the manor, and
the lands and tenements called ‘Pomesbournes’ in Hatfield, Little Berkhamsted, Essendon and elsewhere in Hertfordshire,
truly worth £10 yearly and held of the king during the vacancy of the see of Ely, of the manor of Hatfield which is in the king’s hand during the vacancy, service unknown.
