MARGARET WHO WAS WIFE OF WILLIAM ROOS OF HELMSLEY, KNIGHT

Holdings

She held no lands or tenements in demesne as of fee but William Rempston , John Quynton , William Furby , and William Berford granted the following, among other things, to William Roos , lately deceased, and Margaret his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to William Roos and his heirs and assigns, as more fully contained in the charter, dated at Belvoir on 7 January 1398, shown to the jurors.

Bottesford, the manor, with advowson of the church there and patronage of the chantry of St Mary in the same church.n401 In the manor, there is a hall with annexed chamber, a cookhouse, a great grange, a byre, and a dovecot, worth nothing yearly; an orchard, worth 53s. 4d. yearly; 150 a. arable demesne, each acre worth 8d. yearly; a watermill, worth 20s. yearly; 59 a. meadow, each acre worth 2s. yearly; 2 closes, worth 40s. yearly; a common oven, worth 11s. yearly; 2 other closes called ‘Oxholme’ and ‘Cowholme’, worth 20s. yearly; 22 messuages, worth nothing yearly because ruinousn402; and 6 a. pasture, worth 20s. yearly.n403 There is in the manor a carucate of land in Normanton, parcel of the manor, worth 10s. yearly; and 100s. rent in Normanton, parcel of the manor. The advowson is filled by John Freman, rector , and the chantry is filled by William Witham , by presentation of Margaret.n404 The manor, advowson, and patronage are held of William Babyngton, knight , and William Heton , feoffees of William Roos, knight, deceased, as of the castle of Belvoir, service unknown.
She held the following in dower by endowment of William Babyngton, knight , and William Heton, esquire , both still living, Thomas Arundell, archbishop of Canterbury , William Wyloughby, knight , Richard Shropshire, esquire , Simon Leek, esquire , and John Corby, clerk , all now deceased, feoffees of William Roos , lately husband of Margaret, with reversion to William Babyngton and William Heton .n405 Royal licence was previously obtained [CPR 1408–13, p. 25]. n406

They are parcel of the castle of Belvoir, which is held of the king in chief, service unknown. She held the following for life by endowment of William Roos, lately her husband. n408
Redmile, 1/3 manor, annual value 6s. 4d. yearly, held of William Babyngton and William Heton as of the castle and lordship of Belvoir.

William Heton and John Freman, clerk, have taken the issues of the manor of Bottesford and the rent of 6s. 4d. since Margaret’s death by virtue of royal letters patent [CFR 1437–45, p. 117], and yet take them. n409

She died on 3 July 1438. Thomas Roos , a minor in the king’s wardship is her next heir, viz., son of Thomas son of Margaret, and aged 14 and more.n410
