[1]+ Stephen Betenham, John Beaufitz, Peter Colpepyr, William Sybthorp, clerk, Henry Borne, clerk, William Cheyne, and Thomas Horden were lately seised in demesne as of fee of the following manors and advowsons. Thus seised, they afterwards granted them to John Pympe, esquire, late son of Reynold Pympe, and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to Roger Isle and the heirs male of his body. The grant was made with the licence of Henry IV, by his letters patent dated at Westminster on 20 October 1411 [CPR 1408–13, p. 324], shown to the jurors, regarding the manor and advowson of West Barming. John Pympe was thus seised.
West Barming, the manor, annual value £4,
with advowson of the church there, annual value 40s.,
held of the king in chief as 3 parts of a knight’s fee. The church is currently filled by John Botley, clerk.
East Barming, the manor, annual value 40s., held of the lord Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, as of his manor of Milton, as 1/2 knight’s fee.
Otham, the manor, annual value 69s. 4d.,
with advowson of the church there, annual value 40s.,
held of the count of Aumale as 1/2 knight’s fee. The church is currently filled by John Knollis, clerk.
Read, the manor, annual value £6, held of the duke of Gloucester, as of his manor of Milton, and of the prior of Christchurch, Canterbury, as of his church, service unknown.
Loose, the manor in the parish of East Farleigh, annual value £10, held of the duke of Gloucester, as of his manor of Milton, and of the prior of Christchurch, Canterbury, as of his church, service unknown.
+[1] He held no more lands or tenements other than the aforesaid manors and advowsons which are also specified in the inquisition taken by John Selby, escheator, after the death of Reynold, son of John Pympe, esquire, and returned to Chancery [see 99].

C 139/99/33 mm. 1–2

n325^: C 139: ‘Thursday after the feast of St Fides the Virgin 17 Henry VI’. This translates as 9 October 1438 but this makes no sense in either the context of the date of the writ, or the dates of Byle’s tenure as escheator, which are recorded in the List of Escheators as 6 November 1438–5 November 1439. Taking these dates of tenure as a guide, a more plausible date for the inquisition would be ‘Thursday after the feast of St Fides the Virgin 18 Henry VI’, which translates as 8 October 1439.
