387 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 7 November 1439. [Bate].

Regarding his inheritance as brother and heir of Reynold son and heir of John Pympe, esquire , who held in chief of Henry V . Reynold lately died while a minor in the wardship of the king. The lands and tenements are in the custody of John Wilcotes, esquire , and Isabel, who was wife of John Pympe , by commission of ‪ Henry V [CFR 1413–22, p. 413]. Have them informed of the forthcoming proof of age.

[Dorse:] John Wilcotes and Isabel were informed by John Prat and Richard Ryche that they should come before the king in his Chancery on 4 December next.

The jurors were sworn and diligently examined on the age of John Pympe . They swear that he was born at East Farleigh on Saturday the feast of St Margaret the Virgin 5 ‪Henry V [20 July 1417],n324 baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 on the feast of St Margaret last. Asked how they know, they gave the following reasons. Robert Norton , 60 and more, says that John, prior of Leeds , and Gilbert Dustesham were godfathers and Benedicta Betenham was his godmother. Robert Purs , 70 and more, says that the prior of Leeds gave a gold noble to John. John Yppyngbury , 50 and more, enfeoffed John Joly with an acre of land in East Farleigh. John Reve , 60 and more, says that Richard his son fell from a chamber and broke his right shin. John Coveney , 80 and more, says that Alice his daughter was given in marriage to Robert Buller . Thomas Gerold , 60 and more, had a son born by name of Walter. John Pousy , 50 and more, bore the chrism to the font of the church for the baptism. Robert Tuk , 68 and more, was present when John Pympe was baptised, and he saw him urinating in the font. Thomas Pesmyth , 78 and more, says that Robert his son was captured for hunting in the forest of Tonbridge and taken to the county prison. Thomas Boteler , 58 and more, says that the best ox he ever had fell into a ditch and broke its neck. Thomas Burre , 70 and more, saw Alice Fastyng raise John from the font, and give him a silver goblet. Thomas atte Lese , 60 and more, lost 20 marks at the metes.

n324^: ‘Saturday the feast of St Margaret the Virgin 5 Henry V’ translates as 20 July 1417, but this day was a Tuesday. It should also be noted that, if this date of birth is correct, John Pympe would have been 22 on the feast of St Margaret then last.
