A fine was levied at Westminster on the quindene of St John the Baptist 1438 [CP 25/1/292/69, no. 217], before John Juyn , James Strangways , John Cottesmour , and William Paston , justices, and others present, between John Hody , John Stork , John Chirche, citizen and mercer of London , John Battescombe , John Corbrigge, clerk , and Thomas Est, querents, and Thomas Brook, knight , and Joan his wife, deforciants, regarding, among other things, the following manors, tenements, and rents.n266 Thomas Brook and Joan recognised the manors etc. to be the right of Thomas Est, as held by Thomas and the five Johns by grant of Thomas Brook and Joan; and Thomas and Joan quitclaimed the manors etc. from them and the heirs of Thomas, to Thomas Est and the five Johns, and to the heirs of Thomas Est. Thomas Brook also guaranteed the manors etc. to Thomas, John, John etc. [as above] against all men in perpetuity, as more fully contained in the fine, shown to the jurors. John Hody, John Stork, John Chirche, John Battescombe, John Corbrigge, and Thomas Est were thus seised of the manors, tenements, and rents, viz., John, John, John, John, and John, in demesne as of free tenement, and Thomas Est in demesne as of fee. By deed dated on 14 July 1438, Thomas Est afterwards quitclaimed the manors, tenements, and rents, among other things, for him and his heirs, to John, John, John, John, and John, and their heirs and assigns, so that the five Johns were seised in demesne as of fee, as more fully apparent in the deed, shown to the jurors. The deed was enrolled on the dorse of the Close Rolls in the king’s Chancery [CClR 1435–41, pp. 190–91]. The five Johns are still living, and they have permitted Thomas Brook to occupy the manors, tenements, and rents at their will. Free tenement of the manors etc. has been continuously with the five Johns from the time of the fine and the quitclaim, and Thomas Brook has no estate nor claim unless at the will of John, John, John, John, and John.

n267^: Hokebereis recorded only once in the inquisition, when the lands are broken down and the lord’s name and annual value are described.
