He held no lands or tenements of the king in demesne or service. Long before his death, he was seised of the manor and advowson of Cothelstone, and granted them by charter to John Lutrell, knight , John Warre, esquire , Hugh Cary , and Thomas Kyngeston . They were thus seised in demesne as of fee. The charter was shown to the jurors. John Lutrell and Hugh died so seised, and John Warre and Thomas Kyngeston demised the manor and advowson by charter, shown to the jurors, to Thomas Stowell and Margaret his wife, and the heirs male of the body of Thomas, with successive remainders to the heirs of the body of Thomas; and to the right heirs of [ Thomas ]. Thomas and Margaret were thus seised, viz., Thomas in demesne as of fee tail, and Margaret as of free tenement. Thomas died seised of this estate, and Margaret, ?[who survived him, continues in her estate].
Cothelstone, the manor and advowson of the church, held of Henry, cardinal of England , as of his manor of Taunton, ?[service unknown]. Annual value of the manor, £20.
Annual value of advowson, nil.
He was seised of the manor of Stoney Stratton, and lands and tenements in Stoney Stratton and Evercreech, and granted them by charter to John Lutrell , John Warre , Hugh Cary , and Thomas Kyngeston , and their heirs. They were thus seised in demesne as of fee. The charter was shown to the jurors. John Lutrell and Hugh died so seised, and John Warre and Thomas Kyngeston demised the manor, lands, and tenements by charter, shown to the jurors, to Thomas Stowell , and the heirs male of his body, with successive remainders to the heirs of the body of Thomas, and to the right heirs of Thomas. Thomas was thus seised in demesne as of fee tail, and died so seised.
Stoney Stratton, the manor, and
lands and tenements in Stoney Stratton and Evercreech,
annual value £20, held of John, bishop of Bath and Wells , by knight service. He was lately seised of the manor of Stawell, and granted it to Matthew Coker , and his heirs. Matthew was thus seised in demesne as of fee, and granted the manor to Walter Stowell , son of Thomas, and Joan his wife, to hold to them, and the heirs of the body of Walter, with remainder to the right heirs of Thomas Stowell . Walter and Joan were thus seised, viz., Walter in demesne as of fee tail, and Joan as of free tenement. Walter and Joan had issue: Robert, and Walter died seised of his estate. After his death, Joan continued to be seised in demesne as of free tenement. She took the issues for a long time until Thomas, by a certain agreement with Joan, occupied the manor at her will, and took the issues for the maintenance of Robert: Robert was then, and still is, a minor. Joan is still living.
Stawell, the manor, annual value £20, held of the abbot of Glastonbury , service unknown.

He died on 14 February 1439. Robert son of Walter son of Thomas is next heir of Thomas, and aged 16 years and more.

C 139/91/23 mm. 1–2

n123^: John Spenser held the office of escheator 6 November 1438–5 November, 1439 but Thomas Seintbarbe is recorded in the List of Escheators as the escheator at the time of this inquisition, which Spenser is recorded as taking. Although, therefore, the date of the inquisition is recorded in ms as ‘Thursday before the feast of St Vitalis the Martyr 18 Henry VI’ (21 April 1440), it may instead have been held in 17 Henry VI, during the time that Spenser held the office of escheator. If so, the date translates as 23 April 1439.
