WILLIAM GRILLESTON

Writ Head

126 Writ melius inquirendo. ‡ 2 April 1438. [Kirkeby].

Regarding CIPM XXI, no. 902, an inquisition taken in 1422.n097 It was found that William Grilleston held the manor of Langford for life from the inheritance of Edward son and heir of Robert Langeford, knight , by grant of William Langeford, knight , to William Grilleston and Elizabeth his wife, deceased at the taking of the 1422 inquisition, to hold of William Langeford and his heirs, rendering £9 yearly during the life of Elizabeth, and £10 yearly thereafter. William Langeford was grandfather of Edward, who is his heir, viz., William is the father of Robert father of Edward. After the grant, Elizabeth and William Langeford died, with William Grilleston surviving. The reversion with the £10 rent thus fell to Robert son and heir of William Langeford, knight . Robert then died seised of the reversion as of fee and by right, and of the rent as of free tenement, and the rent and reversion descended to Edward son and heir of Robert, a minor in the wardship of Henry V. Not specified was the age of Edward at the time of the inquisition, or at the time of Robert’s death. Inquire as to the age of Edward.

n097^: The inquisition of 1422 was taken by John Jaybien on 23 June (‘Tuesday the vigil of the Nativity of St John the Baptist 10 Henry V’) despite the fact that the List of Escheators records that he was escheator 22 May 1420–20 May 1422 only (see also CFR 1413–22, pp. 339, 432).

n098^: There is no reference to 20 May in the 1422 inquisition, but the date of the 1438 inquisition appears to have been changed from 20 to 21 May with the insertion of a minim after ‘xx’, to make it ‘xxj’.
