A fine was levied at Westminster on the morrow of Martinmas 1432 [CP 25/1/39/45, no. 26], before William Babyngton, John Martyn, John Juyn, James Strangways, John Cottesmore, and William Paston, between Richard Byngham and John Manchastre, querents, and John Cokayn, knight, and Isabel his wife, deforciants, regarding the following manors and mill. John Cokayn recognised them to be the right of John Manchastre, as those held by John and Richard, and the heirs of John, by grant of John Cokayn. John and Richard then granted them to John Cokayn and Isabel, and to the heirs of their bodies together, with successive remainders to Richard Vernon, knight, and the heirs male of his body; and to the right heirs of John Cokayn. John and Isabel were thus seised of the manors and mill in demesne as of fee tail, and John died jointly seised of this estate with Isabel. Harthill and Middleton, the manors, and a mill in Alport. The manors and mill are not held of the king in chief, but of whom, and by what service, is unknown. A fine was levied at Westminster on the morrow of the Ascension 1435 [CP 25/1/248/71, no. 12], before William Babyngton and his associates, justices, between John Cokayn, knight, querent , and Richard Byngham and John Manchastre, deforciants , regarding the following manor, lands, and tenements. John Cokayn recognised them to be the right of Richard as those held by Richard and John Manchastre by grant of John Cokayn , and Richard and John then granted the manor etc. to John Cokayn for life, with remainder wholly to Isabel, then wife of John Cokayn , and to the heirs male of their bodies together.
