Holdings

The jurors,n127 sworn and separately examined on Walter’s age, say that he was born at East Lulworth and baptised in St Andrew’s church in that vill by John Touker, chaplain , on 25 March 1413, and aged 21 years on 25 March last. Asked how they know they give the following recollections. Walter Tracy ,n128 aged 50 years, was present when John Touker baptised Walter. Robert Godewyn , 60, says John Whytehede, clerk , was Walter’s godfather and he often told him Walter is this age. John Druer , 50, was staying with William Payn , Walter’s father, at the time of his birth. Nicholas Kentecombe , 60, says there was such loud thunder at the time of Walter’s baptism that a ?small boy in the church lost his senses. John Lyveden , 60, says that there was such bright lightning immediately after the baptism that a young girl playing in the vill lost her natural sight. William Knaplok , 48, at the time of Walter’s birth was staying with William Carent , Walter’s grandfather, at Swanage and heard talk of his birth. John Kaylewey , 48, carried a basin and ewer full of water to church that day, to wash the hands of the godfathers and godmother. Walter Radenore , 50, on the day of Walter’s birth met many men and women coming from church who told him that Walter was baptised and a Christian. Ralph Belton , 50, says that Walter Archer, lately abbot of Milton, was godfather to Walter, and often told him that Walter was born at Lulworth on that day. Robert Bakebere , 50, saw the same Walter Archer give the godmother 6s. 8d. at the church door. John Frampton of Dorchester, 46, says that Elizabeth his wife was godmother and often told him that Walter was baptised and a Christian that day at Lulworth. Ralph Loket , 46, carried 2 silver pots full of wine to the church at the time of Walter’s baptism to give to the godfathers and godmother after the baptism.
