Regarding inheritance from Thomas who held of ‪ Henry V in chief, and as the kinswoman and heir of Walter, son and heir of Walter Romsey , brother of Thomas, who held of ‪ Henry VI in chief. Walter the son died a minor in the king’s wardship. Majority claimed by Thomas Payn her husband.

The jurors, sworn and separately examined on Joan’s age, say that she was born at Rockbourne on 31 May 1418, baptised in the church of St Andrew of that vill by John Toppe, chaplain , and was aged 16 years on 31 May last. Asked how they know they give the following recollections. John Borghe , aged 50 years, was present when John Toppe baptised Joan. Thomas Ryngwode , 60, says Thomas, prior of Breamore , was her godfather and he often told him Joan is this age. Richard Parker , 50, was staying with Thomas Romesey, knight , her father, at the time of her birth. Thomas Lawrence , 60, says there was such loud thunder at the time of her baptism that a ?small boy in the church lost his senses. Robert Pokeswell , 66, says that there was such bright lightning at the time of her baptism that a young girl playing in the road lost her natural sight. John Myste , 64, at the time of her birth was staying with Walter Romesey , Joan’s grandfather, at Fareham and heard talk of her birth. John Cooke , 40, on the day of her birth met many men and women coming from church who told him that Joan was baptised and a Christian. John Frauncys , 40, says there was such a strong wind that day that the church belfry (campanil’) fell. Reynold Burell , 44, says that at Rockbourne on the day of her birth Thomas Trumpet feloniously committed suicide with a ?knife [ms soiled] worth 1d. William Thorneton , 46, says that John Slye, servant of Thomas Romesey , Joan’s father, died and was buried in the churchyard that day. John Kymmon , 48, carried a basin and ewer full of water to church that day, to wash the hands of the godfather and godmothers. William Cole , 50, carried 2 silver pots full of wine to the church at the time of her baptism to give to the godfather and godmothers after the baptism.
