JOHN SON OF HENRY BEAUMONT, CHEVALIER

Regarding his inheritance as son of Henry Beaumont who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. The lands and tenements of the inheritance are in the custody of William Babyngton, chevalier , and Thomas Holme by commission of Henry, bishop of Winchester , to whom Henry V gave custody by letters patent. Inform William and Thomas of the forthcoming proof of age [CFR 1413–1422, p. 59].

[Dorse:] William Babyngton and Thomas Holme were informed by William Sutton and Nicholas Burton . Neither appeared on the day. Place of proof given.

LINCOLNSHIRE. Proof of age. Folkingham 21 October 1430. [Sothyll].

John Spanby of Spanby, 60 and more, swears that John was born at Folkingham on 14 August 1409, baptised in the church there on the 15 August, and was aged 21 on 14 August last. He rode with Philip, late bishop of Lincoln , from Sleaford to Folkingham, and was there when the bishop raised John from the font. John Walcote of Walcot, 57 and more, saw master John Southam, canon and residentiary of the cathedral church of St Mary , Lincoln, baptise John. Ralph Oudeby of Haconby, 54 and more, saw William, late Lord Ros , John’s godfather with a huge stomach, raise him from the font at baptism. Robert Dembelby of Dembleby, 60 and more, saw Katherine grand-mother of John, Lady Beaumont , raise him from the font. Thomas Repyngale , 64 and more, saw Elizabeth wife of Robert Eland, esquire , carry John to the church for baptism. William Gregory of Hanthorpe, 55 and more, carried a lit torch around John from Folkingham church to the castle on the day of the baptism. Thomas Stokes of Folkingham, 60 and more, was sent at the command of Elizabeth mother of John, late Lady Beaumont , to tell Henry Beaumont, chevalier , father of John, the good news of John’s birth on the day of the birth. Robert Feltwell of Ruskington, 48 and more, carried a pair of gilt basins with covers from Folkingham castle to the church there on the day of the baptism so that the godfathers and godmother could wash their hands. John Hamond of Leasingham, 50 and more, carried a torch before John from Folkingham church to the castle on the day of the baptism. Thomas Clyderowe of Wylughby , 50 and more, says that Robert his first-born son was born on the day that John was baptised. William Ledbeter of Sleaford, 60 and more, sold a white palfrey on the day of the birth at Folkingham for £10 to Henry Beaumont, chevalier , father of John. John Hood of Osbournby, 60 and more, espoused Alice daughter of John Daventre on 10 August before the birth.
