RICHARD BROTHER OF HUGH AP HARRY

HEREFORDSHIRE AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Proof of age. Bromyard 7 October 1430. [Crofte].
William Parsones of Upper or Lower Sapey (Sapy), 67 and more, swears that Richard was born at Poston on 1 April 1409, baptised in the church of the St Mary the Virgin of Turnastone, and was aged 21 and more on 1 May last. William was then servant to Richard, abbot of Abbey Dore , and came with him to the baptism where the abbot stood as godfather. John Arrundell of Frome , 55 and more, then carried the sword of Griffin ap Harry, esquire , and came to the baptism where Griffin was the other godfather. William Rowedon , and Simon Smyth , each 50 and more, came to the baptism with Joan, the lady de la Grave, Richard’s godmother. They saw the walls of the church decorated with cloths of red and black. John Hopton , and John Strotte of Bromyard, each 53 and more, saw Walter, prior of Clifford , baptise Richard. Thomas Arlowe , 44 and more, says that the vill of Chanstone was burnt and destroyed by a sudden invasion of Welsh rebels on the day of the baptism. William Wyke , 44 and more, saw Joan, lady of Snodhill, carrying Richard to the church for baptism. John Ree , 55 and more, held a lit candle in the church during Richard’s baptism. John Taillour of Stoke Lacy, 45 and more, says that Richard, Lord Grey of Codnor , rode with his army through Poston to the castle of Grosmont to resist the Welsh rebels. Richard Covyng of Bromyard and Robert Broun , each 48 and more, were bound to Thomas ap Harry , uncle of Richard ap Harry , for 100s. The bond was dated at Poston on the day of the baptism.
