Taken in the presence of Robert Crakanthorp and William Sharewe, clerk . John Crakanthorp, senior , 60 and more, swears that Ralph was born at Cockermouth, baptised in the chapel of St Michael in the castle there on 4 April A.D. 1406, and was 22 on 22 September last. He was a servant in the castle of Cockermouth on 4 April and saw Ralph carried to the chapel for his baptism. Twenty-two years have passed since then. William Crakanthorp , 50 and more, says that Margaret his daughter was sought to nurse and care for Ralph on that 4 April. John Hoton , 46 and more, knew because John his father told him that Ralph had been carried to baptism in the chapel at Cockermouth. John Salkeld , 44 and more, knew because he was wounded on the day of the birth at a great battle between the Scots and English at Carlisle. John Forster , 50, knew because it was raining heavily. Roger Garth , 60, knew because John his son was born on the same day, and John is aged 22 and more. John Crakanthorp, senior [sic], 48, knew because Elizabeth his daughter married John Asshewell . William Spytell , 60, knew because Henry Spytell his brother was clerk of the chapel and officiated at the baptism. William Benyngton , 80 and more, carried to the chapel the basin and ewer used by Ralph’s godfathers and godmothers to wash their hands after the baptism. John Watson of Culgaith, 50, rode to Carlisle immediately after the birth to tell the father, John Nevill . William Coteford , 44, went fishing in the River Eden and caught 40 salmon. He gave four to Ralph’s mother. Robert Imster , 60 and more, knew because his house in Cockermouth went up in flames. While working to extinguish the fire with his neighbours, he saw Ralph carried to the chapel for baptism.
