ROBERT BOTELER OF HARTWELL

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. Inquisition. Rothwell 10 August 1429. [Palmer].

Jurors

Jurors: John Hertwell of Hartwell; Henry Hertwell of Piddington; Thomas Carter of Rothwell; William Gyles and John Soull of Ashton; Thomas Prest of Hartwell; John Blake of Roade; William Bailly of Stoke ; and William Stanerton , Thomas Mylner , Thomas Aldurman , John Castell , John Emme , and John Crosse of Rothwell.

Holdings
John Newbold, chaplain , was seised of the following in demesne as of fee.
Hartwell, Roade, Ashton, and Bozenham, a messuage, worth nothing yearly; 8 virgates, each truly worth 6s. yearly, and 20 a. land, each acre worth 3d. yearly; and 9 curtilages, each worth 12d. yearly. With the exception of one acre called ‘le Briselande’, held of the king in chief by 3d. yearly from time out of mind, the lands and tenements are held by knight service of Lord Say as of the honour of Dover.
John Newbold granted these lands and tenements to Thomas son of Thomas Boteler of Hartwell and to Alice wife of Thomas, daughter of John, and to the heirs of their bodies. The grant was made by a charter shown to the jurors. Thomas and Alice had issue: Robert, and died seised of this estate. The lands and tenements descended to Robert.

He died seised of the above on 14 August 1407. Isabel wife of John Everard is his daughter and next heir, and aged 36 years.

John Mauntell, senior , and John Mauntell, junior , trespassed onto the lands when Robert was overseas in the king’s service, occupied them, and took the issues for their own use from 14 August until now.
