SUFFOLK. Proof of age. Halesworth 10 November 1427. [Elliswyk].

She was born at the manor of Halesworth on 24 June 1413 and is aged 14 and more. She was baptised in the church of St Mary there on the same day and the jurors were asked how they know that she is of age. William Merlond , 40, attended the baptism and carried salt, in a silver salt-cellar, and a towel to it. Nicholas Stampard , 36, carried a basin and ewer with water to the church so that William Hardy who baptised Joan, John Tolle , godfather, and Joan Elmy and Katherine Berneye , godmothers, could all wash their hands. Thomas Bret , 54, Robert Borell , 40, John Dobbes , 63, and William Randolf , 54, stood by the font while she was baptised, and held four lit torches. John Barbour , 42, William Elmy , 43, and Robert Payn , 46, were standing in the porch of the church and saw Alice Hemme , midwife, carrying Joan to the church for baptism. William Fleccher , 60, Roger Barkere , 60, and Alexander Hovell , 38, were in the church on the Saturday that Joan was baptised, then went to the manor with the midwife who was carrying Joan. A great oak standing before the door of the hall suddenly fell, a branch hit the midwife, and she only just escaped with her life.
