YORKSHIRE. Proof of age. York castle. 12 June 1424. [Hay]

The jurors say that Henry was aged 21 years on 8 April last, that he was born at Hazelwood and baptised in the parish church there on 8 April 1402. Asked how they know, they give the following reasons. Robert White , aged 50 years and more, heard mass in the church that day and saw Henry baptised there, and the same day a grange of his at Spofforth was burnt through misfortune. Robert Gunby , 60 years and more, says his brother was drowned in the river Derwent that day. Richard Puleyn of Sherburn ?in Elmet, 56 years and more, says a thief feloniously stole a grey, good ambling horse from him at Sherburn ?in Elmet that day. John Skipwith , 53 years, had a son named Edmund born at Ferry Fryston (Fery) that day. Robert Aberford , 60 years and more, was stripped of his horse and harnesses by thieves near Ferry Fryston (Ferybrigge), while riding to Pontefract that day. Thomas Studerd , 52 years and more, says the parochial church of Sherburn ?in Elmet was burgled that day and stripped by thieves of chalice, Bible and altar cloth. Thomas Herdewyk , 58 years and more, says his mother died at ?East or West Hardwick that day. Richard Clerk , 55 years and more, says his boat loaded with stones sunk in the river Wharfe that day. Roger Blase , 61 years and more, says he had a cow which had two white calves that day, one had black ears and the other red. Thomas Scalwra , 54 years and more, says one of his brothers was married that day at Ilkley to a woman of great age. Henry Scalwra of Ilkley, 56 years and more, says a daughter of his died at Ilkley that day. Richard Blase of Tadcaster, 80 years and more, bought a parcel of wood from Henry Vavasour , father of this Henry, at Hazelwood that day, for which he paid £20 sterling in advance to Henry the father.
