The jurors, separately examined, say that Walter was aged 21 years on Tuesday in Pentecost week last and was born at ?Thorpe-le-Soken and baptised in the church baptistery there on Tuesday in Pentecost week [16 May] 1402 [sic], that his godfathers were Walter Doreward and John Page and his godmother Agnes then wife of William Brette . Asked how they know, they give the following reasons, the events being 21 [sic] years ago. William Hardyng of Mistley, aged 60 years and more, says that on that day Elizabeth his daughter died and was buried at Thorpe-le-Soken. John Helbek , 46 years and more, was playing football with his fellows at Thorpe-le- Soken immediately after Walter’s baptism and broke his left shin. Walter Moys , 44 years and more, was at Thorpe-le-Soken at the time of Walter’s baptism and held a burning torch. John Sawyere , 58 years and more, says that at Thorpe-le-Soken on 29 August 1401 he drove his cart loaded with hay from the manor of Thorpe-le-Soken’s demesne meadow to its grange. He fell from the laden cart in the grange and broke his left arm. The following Tuesday in Pentecost week Walter was born. Richard Marchall , 47 years and more, says that Monday in Pentecost week 1402, Walter Bunt, clerk , was instituted and inducted at Thorpe-le-Soken as perpetual vicar of the church, and the following Wednesday in Pentecost week he baptised Walter in the baptistery. Richard served the vicar. Richard Wilby , 59 years and more, says that on 8 September 1401 at Thorpe-le- Soken, he married Rose his late wife, then servant of Joan mother of Walter, and the following Tuesday in Pentecost week Walter was born. Thomas Hulnewode , 54 years and more, was at Thorpe-le-Soken with Joan his wife when Joan mother of Walter gave birth and they were at her churching on 24 June 1402. John Barkere , 57 years and more, says that Thomas his son took holy orders long before Tuesday in Pentecost week 1402, and celebrated his first mass at Thorpe-le-Soken church the day that Walter was born and baptised. John Talbot , 53 years and more, had William his first-born son baptised in the baptistery of Thorpe-le-Soken church that day and on Tuesday in Pentecost week last William was aged 21 years. John Hory , 51 years and more, says that on that day Richard Hory his father died at Thorpe-le-Soken, and he thereby inherited lands and tenements in Thorpe-le- Soken. John Crouche of Borflete, 48 years and more, says that on that day John Wareyn hanged himself from a tie-beam at Thorpe-le-Soken, and he came that day to see John Wareyn hanging. John Aunger , 56 years and more, says that his house in Thorpe-le-Soken burned down immediately after Walter’s birth.
