Joan’s majority claimed by John Bartelot her husband. Regarding inheritance as one of the daughters and heirs of John Leukenore who held by knight service of John brother and heir of Thomas, late Earl Marshal , who held of ‪Henry IV in chief, and as sister and heir of Elizabeth the other daughter and heir of John Leukenore , who died a minor in ‪Henry IV’s wardship. John Burgh , to whom custody of 9 marks rent of free tenants in Sussex was committed by letters patent of ‪Henry IV, to be informed [CPR 1408–13, p.243, 5 November 1410].

The jurors say that Joan was born at Cranleigh and baptised in the church there, and was aged 19 years on 24 March last. They know well for the following reasons. Stephen Sloughterforde , aged 60 years and more, saw Joan carried to church for baptism the same day that she was born and immediately after the baptism there was a great... [ms galled] in the vill. Richard Ede , 53 years and more, says that Elizabeth his wife was asked to be Joan’s wet-nurse on the day that she was born. John Clousere , 58 years and more, says that Margaret his wife was present at Joan’s birth and told him that Joan was born in that vill and baptised in that church. William atte Vykers , 49 years and more, says that Elizabeth his sister was asked to go to Cranleigh to be Joan’s wet-nurse at the time of her birth. William Maunsell , 51 years and more, says that Joan his wife, then wife of the same Ralph Burton [sic], gave birth to a daughter named Joan on 24 June following the birth of Joan daughter of John Leukenore . Richard White , 45 years and more, says that when he began his ploughing at Cranleigh the same day that Joan was born, many of his neighbours told him that she was born and baptised. John Thorndone , 50 years and more, says that many of his neighbours revealed to him at the time of Joan’s birth that she was born in the same vill and baptised in the same church. Walter Baylyng , 56 years and more, was a servant at the manor of Cranleigh when Joan was born and at the time of her birth he asked women help her mother. Richard Bechet , 47 years and more, was watching his sheep in the archbishop of Canterbury’ s marsh in Cranleigh, and very many of his neighbours told him at the time of Joan’s birth that she was then born and baptised. Richard Eylone , 44 years and more, says that Isabel Burton , his wife, was asked to be Joan’s wet-nurse. Philip Maye , 46 years and more, says that Celestria his mother died at Luddenham at the time of Joan’s birth. Peter Haute , 42 years and more, says that Richard Wylde, parson of Buckland church at the time of Joan’s birth, was asked to name her at the baptismal font.
