Inquisition Head

Yorkshire. Proof of age. Northallerton. 1 May. [Barton].

Thomas Blawefrount senior , 50, says that Joan was born at Skelton and baptized in the church there and was 15 years old on 18 Oct. last. He knows because his daughter Isabel married John Wilton on the day of her baptism. The other jurors say the same. They know for the following reasons: John Shepley , 58, carried a ewer and basin of silver from the manor of Skelton to the church with water for Joan's godfather and godmothers to wash their hands in after raising her from the font. Robert Cawpon , 60, carried a large candle from the manor of Skelton to the church and held it during Joan's baptism. John Marton , 54, met many men and women coming from the church who told him that Joan had been baptized amid great rejoicing. Thomas Lasyngby , 49, saw Joan Falkinle , Joan's godmother, give her a little bell after her baptism and her nurse 6s. 8d. John Maltby , 42, says that his son Robert, who had been seriously ill for a long while, died and was buried at Skelton on the day of Joan's baptism. John Lokwod , 51, carried 2 measures of silver, one filled with `Clarry', the other with `Malvesye' wine, with 4 silver cups from the manor of Skelton to the church for Joan's godfather and godmothers and others standing round the font to drink. William Warde of Ormesby , 44, was at the church and saw Robert Foster give water to Joan's godfather and godmothers to wash their hands in after raising her from the font. Thomas Lonysdale , 48, was bailiff of the manor and at the time of Joan's birth was sent to summon Alice Ingram to be her nurse. Thomas Gower of Lackenby , 41, says that a great wind arose and that all the men and women of the township were afraid that their houses would be weakened and blown down. John Pecche , 43, was clerk of the parish church of Skelton and held a book in front of the priest during Joan's baptism. John Wylys of Egton , 45, says that Robert Freman, clerk , Joan's godfather, gave her a cup of silver gilt and her nurse 6s. 8d.
