Holdings

An idiot from birth, his lands are not sufficient for his upkeep. His father John, whose heir he is, died seised in his demesne as of fee of a messuage, 30 cottages, 400 a. arable, 100 a. meadow, 20 a. wood, 400 a. pasture and 10s. rent in Great Bourton, Hardwick, Wardington, Eynsham, Tilgarsley, Witney, Water Eaton, Woodeaton, Noke, Finmere and Banbury. In order to disinherit John the son after the death of John the father, the lands were alienated 3 Nov. 1420 by order of the king to Robert Betrych and John Taillour of Banbury , chaplain s. They alienated the lands 1 Jan. 1421 to John Waver and his wife Alice, who now hold them. Since 8 Nov. 1420 Robert, John, John and Alice have taken the profits, but what portion each received or receives is unknown. John the son has no other lands. Annual value 20 marks, but of whom the lands are held is unknown. Memorandum. On 22 Nov. 1421 in response to a commission issued to Peter Paule and Henry Bromley, king's serjeant [5 Nov. 1421: CPR 1416-22, p. 402], John the son was brought before William Hankeford, chief justice , and others of the king's council in Chancery and ways of providing for him were considered. After deliberation, it was decided that John was of sound mind and not an idiot and he was dismissed.
