JOHN DE HASTYNGES, EARL OF PEMBROKE, and his son JOHN DE HASTYNGES

Regarding CIPM XVIII, nos 897 and 898, inquisitions taken in 1390 after the death of John de Hastynges, son of John de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke.

[The two above writs resulted two nearly identical inquisitions, taken on the same date by the same jury. The following details relate to the inquisition answering the writ dated 4 July.]

Jurors: John Short ; Thomas Baryngton ; John Waryn ; John Blome ; Ralph Wirham ; John Irlond ; Richard Sturmyn ; Robert Barkere ; Adam Clerk ; Simon Yonge ; Robert Mykelwode ; and William Herman .

[The same jurors appear in the inquisition answering the writ dated 1 July but in the following order: Wirham, Sturmyn, Short, Blome, Irlond, Barkere, Mykelwode, Clerk, Herman, Yonge, Waryn, Baryngton.]

Holdings

In addition to the holdings as returned to the Chancery of ‪ Edward III [CIPM XIV, no. 148] he held the manor of Westley in his demesne as of fee of the earl of March, of the honor of Clare, service unknown, annual value 100s.

He died on 3 Aug. 1375. His son John died under age in the king's ward on 30 Dec. 1389. Reynold de Grey, lord of Ruthin , is next heir, being the son of Reynold, son of Elizabeth, daughter of John de Hastynges and Isabel, one of the sisters and heirs of Aymer de Valence, late earl of Pembroke , from whom descended John, brother of Elizabeth, father of Laurence, father of John.
Robert Hethe , John White, knight , and John Straunge, knight , all deceased, Margery wife of John White, knight , and Eleanor wife of John Straunge, knight , held the manor from the death of John son of John, title unknown. On the day of the inquisition Eleanor was holding alone and taking the profits, title unknown.
