RALPH DE MOBERLEY

Writ Head

595 Writ. ‡ 25 November 1442. [Cerff].

‪ Henry IV , by letters patent dated 18 January 1406, enrolled in Originalia of that year, rot. 19, of his special grace granted to Ralph de Moberley all the lands, tenements, rents, services and other profits which were of Thomas Faucumbergge, knight , in the parish [sic] of Dartford and Sutton at Hone (Sutton). The lands, etc., which do not exceed the value of 6 marks, came to ‪ Henry IV ’s hand by the forfeiture of Thomas, who traitorously (proditorie) rose up against his royal majesty in the company of Richard, late archbishop of York , and of Thomas, late earl Marshal . Ralph was to hold the lands, etc., for the term of his life, in the same way that Thomas held them while he lived. The present king is informed with certainty that Ralph de Moberley is dead, and that the lands, etc., ought to revert to the king; and that various men have entered therein, and received the issues since Ralph’s death, without royal licence, to the contempt and damage of the king. The escheator is ordered to inquire as to the date of Ralph’s death, and as to who occupied the lands, etc., and received the issues from that date; and to summon the occupiers before the Barons of the Exchequer, at Westminster, in the octave of Hilary, to give account for the issues. He is to make a faithful extent of the lands, etc., and have the inquisition and extent before the Barons at the above date and place; meanwhile, to take the lands, etc., into the king’s hand and keep them safe; and to inform the Barons of the day of the taking. Witnessed by John Fray , by originalia of 7 ‪ Henry IV , rot. 19, and by a writ returned by the sheriff of the above county on the morrow of Michaelmas last.
