RICHARD SALKELD , KIN AND HEIR OF RICHARD SALKELD

Regarding his inheritance as the son of Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Richard. The lands and tenements from his inheritance were held in chief by Katherine, who was the wife of Richard, father of Thomas, deceased, for the term of her life. Now, by royal grant [CFR 1437–45, pp. 152, 226], they are in the custody of Otuel Worsley and Roland Vaux , who are to be warned. [Dorse:] They were warned [date and place as below] by William Colman , Richard Cott , Richard Jonson , and John Atkynson .

Holdings

The jurors swear that he is 21 and more, and was on Michaelmas last, and was born at Wetheral on Michaelmas [year not specified], and baptised in the same church. They know and recall this with reference to the following memories of the day of the birth and baptism. Nicholas Radchyff [sic], chevalier, aged 50 and more, was in the church to hear mass, and saw Richard baptized and lifted from the font. William Stapylton and John Skelton , each aged 60 and more, separately examined, recall because Alice, the daughter of Thomas Smyth , was espoused to John Tott , in the same church. They were present at the espousals and saw the baptism. William Louther of Rose and Robert Sandford, each aged 60 and more, separately examined, rode on the highway between Carlisle castle and the church of Wetheral, and met various men and women carrying Richard to the church to be baptised. Hugh Salkeld , and John Hoton of Penrith, ach aged 50 and more, separately examined, were present at the burial of John Scott in the same church, and saw Richard lifted from the font. Robert Loncastre and Thomas More , each aged 46 and more, were present at the burial of John Lamonby in the same church, and saw the baptism. John had been killed at Wetheral by the king’s enemies the Scots. William Dikys , aged 60 and more, jumped over a great ditch outside the cemetery of the church, fell, and broke his right shin. Robert Salkeld , and William Louther of Crookdake, each aged 48 and more, separately examined, were at the church at a love-day concerning various disputes between John Lambert and Thomas Hudson . They brought them to agreement, and saw Richard carried from the church after the baptism. [Head:] Delivered to court on 25 November.
