Holdings
He held the following in demesne as of fee.
St Stephens, 1 a. land in the parish, annual value 4d., held of the king in chief by rent of 1d. at Easter and Michaelmas.
Burston, the manor, held of John, abbot of the monastery of St Albans, service unknown. In the manor there is a site, worth 12d. yearly, and there are there a hall and a kitchen, under a tiled roof, worth nothing yearly; a chamber similarly tiled, worth nothing yearly; a house called ‘le Malthouse’, covered with thatch (stramine), worth nothing yearly; a small stable, covered with thatch, worth nothing yearly; a sheepfold, covered with thatch, worth nothing yearly; a large grange, covered with tiles, worth nothing yearly; 263 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 56 a. pasture, each acre worth 3d. yearly and no more because it is overgrown with briars and thorns; 8 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 24 a. coppice-wood, of which 1 a. can be cut each year, and is then worth 3s. 4d.; 16s. 7½d. assize rent from various free tenants, received at Michaelmas; £4 12s. 1½d. customary rent from various tenants according to the custom of the manor, received at Michaelmas; and a court baron, held every three weeks, worth 3s. 4d. yearly in perquisites and issues.

He died on 24 February 1445. Thomas Charleton, esquire , is his son and next heir, aged 30 and more.

John, abbot of the monastery of St Albans , occupied the manor and received the issues from the time of Thomas’s death until the day of this inquisition, by what title and in what way not known.
