The jurors, separately examined, swear that he was born at Boxley and baptized in the church of the vill on Candlemas [ 2 February ] 1423, and was aged 22 on the vigil of that feast [ 1 February ] 1445. They know and recall this for the following reasons. John Pastron , aged 53 and more, knows because, in the same year that Hugh was born, Hugh’s father demised to John a piece of land in Boxley for the term of 40 years, of which 22 years had passed in 23 ‪ Henry VI [1444–5]. John Asshebey , aged 50 and more, had a son called Henry born of his wife, who survives, on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin [ 15 August ] 1423. Henry was 22 on 15 August 1445. John Beche , aged 40 and more, was a servant of Thomas the father. He was sent to fetch the midwife to help Hugh’s mother during the birth. Because of his haste and because of the slipperiness of the path, he fell on one of his knees, and broke that knee, and his ankle. He was often burdened by this misfortune afterwards. John Chelynton , aged 45 and more, caused a new house at Boxley to be built, in which he now dwells, in the same year that Hugh was born. Thomas Halle , aged 50, was a servant of Thomas the father, and was sent to invite the godfathers and godmother to lift Hugh from the font. He went in the morning, before it was light. Crossing a stream by a little bridge, he fell in the stream and was severely chilled (infrigidatus). Richard Bele , Henry Holme , John Porter , and John Bokesille , each aged 44 and more, carried 4 burning wax torches during the baptism at the request of Hugh’s father. John Welles , Robert Lellesden , and Robert Salmon , each aged 57, were present at the baptism and saw Hugh raised from the font. After the ceremony they drank well of wine and beer that Hugh’s father had sent to the church.
