ANNE, ONE OF THE KIN AND HEIRS OF WILLIAM CHEYNE, KNIGHT , AND CECILY ONCE HIS WIFE

She is one of the daughters of Edmund Cheyne, knight , son of Cecily. She is also one of the sisters and heirs of Cecily – another daughter of Edmund, and another of the kin and heirs of William and Cecily, who both held of the king in chief – who lately died a minor in royal custody. Majority claimed by her husband, John Wilughby . By royal grant [CFR 1430–37, pp. 80–1], the lands and tenements from her inheritance are in the custody of Alice, who was the wife of Walter Tailboys , who is to be warned. [Dorse:] She was warned [place and date as below] by Henry Bradlegh , John Mayn , Nicholas Brude , and Nicholas Pryns , and did not come.

Holdings

The jurors swear that she was born at the manor of Brook in the parish of Westbury on the feast of St Anne [ 26 July ] 1428 and baptised on the same day in the church of Westbury. She was aged 16 on 26 July last. They know and recall this with reference to the following memories of the day of her birth and baptism. John Wolley , aged 50 and more, rode to the manor of Brook to speak with Edmund, her father, concerning various matters. As he rode home towards ?Bradford-on-Avon (Bradeford) he fell from his horse at Westbury and broke his left arm. John Cuttyng , aged 50 and more, walked with Edmund around a park pertaining to the manor of Brook. For certain words that he spoke, Edmund beat him so that for a long time afterwards he despaired of his life. Thomas Blaunchard , aged 56 and more, was a servant of Edmund, and he broke 6 copper or bronze ?water-pots (? idreas), so that Edmund broke his head with a stick which he used to have in his hand. This was at the manor of Brook. Nicholas Beche , aged 58 and more, had a white horse worth 6 marks at pasture in a park pertaining to the manor of Brook. It fell on a pale and died. Thomas Horner , aged 60 and more, sold a ‘bay’ horse to Edmund for 100s. at Westbury. John Vede , aged 69 and more, rode to Heywood for John Westbury, senior , to be godfather. John Bryt of Brook, aged 72, recalls because Cecily, Anne’s grandmother, rode from the manor of Brook to the church of All Saints at Westbury, to be godmother to his own daughter Cecily, who was born and baptised on the same day. John Stephenys , aged 66 and more, recalls because Richard his son was buried in the cemetery at Westbury. John Goweyn , aged 70 and more, with 11 other men of the parish, held 12 burning torches in the church during the baptism. Thomas Waleys , aged 51 and more, recalls because Alice his wife gave birth to John, his first-born son, at Westbury. John Gibbes , aged 52 and more, recalls because Margaret, his wife, gave birth to Alice, his daughter, on the same day, and Alice was baptised immediately after Anne. John Pone , aged 50 and more, recalls because Alice, his wife, gave birth to Thomas, his first-born son, at Westbury. He heard Anne’s godmothers arguing about Anne’s name in the church, and they agreed to name her Anne because she was born on the feast of that saint.
