Holdings
1445. [fitz Harry]. The jurors, separately examined, swear that he is 21 and more, and was born at Birley on the feast of St Lucy [ 13 December ] 1423, and baptised in the church of the same vill. John Carewardyn , Walter Wryng , John Dryver , and John Geyues , each aged 40, were present in the church at the time of the baptism, and heard the rector order the clerk of the church to enrol William’s name and the time of his birth in the book of benefactors (mortilagium) of the church, as a perpetual memorial of the birth. Geoffrey Bayly , John Smyth of Hinton, Walter Smyth of Madley, Philip Bampton , and Edmund Rowdon , each aged 45, were present in the church at the time of the baptism, and saw two women heating water to warm the font. Richard Grene , John Gorewey , John Golafre , and John Kynardesley , each aged 50, were in the cemetery of the church at the time of the baptism, and saw William Hasell and John Lenton argue and fight, and William struck John with a sword on his left arm.
