Holdings

He held no lands or tenements of the king in demesne as of fee or in service. Margaret, who was the wife of John Asphull , was seised of the following in demesne as of fee, and married the said John Symond . They had issue: Joan, wife of William Gaynesford . Margaret died seised of such estate, and after her death John held the manor by curtesy. He died seised of such estate. The reversion pertains to Joan as daughter and heir of Margaret.

Ashwell, the manor. In the manor there are 200 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 10 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 50 a. old great wood, worth nothing yearly; 12 a. alder, each acre worth 2s. every seventh year, worth nothing this year because they were cut last year; and 20s. assize rent received at Easter and Michaelmas from various tenants. Of the above, 132 a. arable, 6 a. meadow, 6 a. alder, 50 a. wood, and 20s. rent are held of the king in chief by paying him a spit (veru) of timber on the day of his coronation. The residue of the manor, known as parcel of the manor, is held of John Helyon , of his manor of Nortofts, by service of 10s.
He was seised of the following in demesne as of fee.
Great Bardfield, Toppesfield, Finchingfield, Wethersfield, Sible Hedingham, Stambourne, and Great Yeldham, 4 messuages, each worth 40d. yearly; 400 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 24 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 20 a. wood, each acre worth 10s. when cut, worth nothing this year because all was cut within the last three years; and 40s. assize rent and rent of 2 capons and 1 lb. cumin, received from various tenants at Easter and Michaelmas, not held of the king of chief, nor any parcel of them, but of Reynold Grantham , service unknown.

He died on 2 October last. The above Joan, wife of William Gaynesford , is his daughter and next heir, aged 24 and more.
