RANULPH RYE, SON OF RANULPH RYE

His father held by knight service of the heirs of Philip, late lord Darcy , lately a minor in royal custody. By royal grant [CFR 1430–7, pp. 17–18] the lands and tenements from Ranulph’s inheritance are in the custody of Katherine Rye and John Vincent , who are to be warned. [Dorse:] Katherine is dead. John was warned by Robert Norton and Charles Holand .

DERBYSHIRE. Proof of age [indented]. Dronfield. 3 July 1444. [Roos].

The jurors swear that he was born at Whitwell on the feast of St George [ 23 April ] 1423, and baptized in the church there, and was aged 21 on the same feast last passed. They know and recall this with reference to the following memories of the day of the birth. Thomas Woderove , aged 50 and more, was feoffed by Robert Grene in a bovate of land in Norton. Robert Woderove , aged 70 and more, knows because his third son John was born at Wormhill. Thomas Fox of Coal Aston (Aston), aged 60 and more, acquired a messuage and 2 bovates of land in Dronfield from Thomas Barker , ‘goldsmyth’. Thomas Bagshawe , aged 60 and more, espoused Margaret, the daughter of William Woderove , at Hope. Reynold Wode , aged 60 and more, knows because John Mason , his late servant, was drowned at Romeley in a pit called ‘Colepitte’. William Warde , aged 70 and more, knows because Robert, his son, fell from a chamber and broke his shin. John Balgy , aged 62 and more, knows because Joan, his daughter, was buried at Hathersage. Thomas Margerie , aged 53 and more, lost 40s. at the boundary of John Furber . William Stevenson , aged 59 and more, began to build his grange at Whitwell. John Margerie , aged 50 and more, began to fell a ‘hegge’ of wood in the park of Whitwell. John Wennesley , aged 51 and more, saw Joan Mordon lift Ranulph from the font and give him a silver goblet. Robert Austyn , aged 57 and more, carried Ranulph in his arms from the manor of Whitwell, where Ranulph was born, to the church where he was baptized.
