In the manor there are a hall, a chamber, a kitchen, a ?grange (grand’), a byre, and a sheepfold, which with the residue of the manorial site are worth nothing yearly; a carucate of land worth 12s. yearly; 42 a. meadow, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 20s. annual rent from free tenants; £12 10s. 3d. rent from neif tenants at Christmas, Easter, the feast of St Botulph, and Michaelmas; the ploughing services of these neif tenants at winter and Lent sowing-times, worth 3s. 4d. yearly; and their harvest labour services, worth 6s. 8d. yearly. Otterburn, the manor, held as ¼ knight’s fee. The manorial site contains a hall, three chambers, a chapel, three stables, a kitchen, and a buttery in a tower, parcel of the castle and manor, and worth nothing yearly. In the manor there are: 200 messuages in the march of Scotland, each worth 4d. yearly; 200 tofts, worth nothing yearly because they are wasted and in the march of Scotland and cannot be demised at farm; 20 cottages, each worth 4d. yearly; 1000 a. arable in the march of Scotland, worth 6s. yearly; 300 a. wood in the same march, worth 6s. yearly; 2000 a. meadow, worth 40s. yearly; and the following pastures, all of which are near the Scots in the march of Scotland and are worth 60s. yearly: ‘Redeshedde’ containing 200 a., Lumsdon Law containing 500 a., ‘Rapeshom’ containing 500 a., Spithope containing 1000 a., Cottonshope containing 2000 a., ‘Akynsyde’ containing 300 a., Burdhope containing 2000 a., ‘Thylles’ containing 2000 a., Kellyburn containing 5000 a., Earlside containing 3000 a., Chattlehope and Bateinghope lying together containing 5000 a., Ridlees, Wilkwood, and ‘Wherlemore’ containing 6000 a., and Dudlees containing 500 a. Various free tenants hold their tenements by 119s. 8½d. service rent, and rent of 9 lb. pepper and 9 lb. cumin, payable at the feasts of St Cuthbert in Lent and Autumn; in time of war they pay no rent, except their aid to their lord in keeping the valley of Redesdale, where the castle of Harbottle and the manor are located, from wolves and robbers. All the lands and tenements within the bounds of the castle and manor are parcel of the castle and manor and are called ‘in the liberty of Redesdale’. There pertain to the manor the advowson of the church of Elsdon, worth £10 yearly in time of peace, and the advowson of the nunnery of Holystone, whose nuns can spend (expendere) £10 yearly in time of peace. The following liberties and franchises pertain to the castle and manor: cognizance of all pleas arising in the liberty of Redesdale, with the issues thereof, including pleas of the crown, to be pleaded before justices assigned by the lord of the manor, and to be claimed by the bailiffs of the lord of the liberty before any other justices; return and execution of all royal writs arising in Redesdale by the bailiffs of the lord of the liberty; the chattels of fugitives, felons, and the condemned, and year, day and waste of their lands, and their custody in and delivery from prison (prisona) at his will; the execution by the lord’s ministers of everything pertaining to the office of sheriff and coroner in the liberty of Redesdale; a market at Harbottle within the bounds of the manor every Tuesday, and a yearly fair there on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin; a market at Elsdon every Sunday, and a yearly fair there on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin; and gallows, ‘tumbrell’, ‘pelory’, and toll in these markets and fairs, and whatever else pertains to them. No sheriff or other bailiff or minister of the king should enter the liberty of Redesdale to carry out any office. Royal justices itinerant in Northumberland should deliver the articles of the crown to the bailiff of the liberty, to be pleaded there by justices assigned by the lord of the liberty, who ought to have the profits thereof. All these liberties and franchises were allowed to the lords of the manor under ‪ Edward I and ‪ Edward III by title of prescription. There also pertain to the manor two annual views of frankpledge held after Easter and Michaelmas; another court held every three weeks; and another court held twice a year at the will of the lord called ‘Fostercourt’. The view of frankpledge, court(s), return of writs, markets and fairs, ‘wayf’, ‘stray’, ⁿ⁰⁹³ cognizance of all pleas, chattels and year, day and waste, and custody and delivery of prisoners are worth 5 marks yearly.
