The jurors swear that he was born at Bradwell-on-Sea in the hundred of Dengie on the feast of St Giles [ 1 September ] [year not specified], and baptized on the same day in the parish church of St Thomas Apostle there; and that he was aged 21 on the same feast last. They know this well for the following reasons. n61 Robert Seburgh , aged 66, married Katherine, late wife of John de la Doune – Robert’s father – on 26 August after John’s death; and on the preceding feast of St Giles , Robert de la Doune was aged five. Henry Maldon , aged 58, on the day of Robert’s birth bought a grey horse at the fair (nundinae) held at the hospital of St Giles of Maldon. He rode on it and it threw him so that he broke his right arm. Richard Strangman , aged 42, was then a servant of Robert’s father, and carried before him to the church a basin and ewer with water for the godfathers and godmothers to wash their hands after the baptism. John Hokyn , aged 34, fell from a tree that day collecting apples in his father’s orchard, and had such a fall that he lay in bed for a month. John Comyn , aged 48, married his wife Joan on Michaelmas next after the day of Robert’s birth. Henry Kyng aged 49, knows because his father John Kyng died on the day of Robert’s birth.

Richard Pynder , aged 56, knows because John, his son and heir, died on the same day.

William Barlyng , aged 64, that day built a new barn on his tenement in Mundon. John Salvage , aged 53, knows because his son Richard was born on the feast of St James [ 25 July ] before Robert’s birth; and Richard was aged 21 on the same feast last. William Foucher , aged 55, knows because his wife Margaret, after the death of their daughter Isabel, was Robert de la Doune ’s nurse; and Isabel died on the feast of the nativity of the Virgin [ 8 September ] following Robert’s birth. William Baroun , aged 57, was then a servant of John de la Doune ; and on the day of the birth, he loaded a cart in the field called ‘le Brodefeld’ with sheaves of John’s oats, and fell from the cart and broke his left thigh. John Webbe , aged 32, was then at school in the same church with John Manne , then parish priest of Bradwell-on-Sea , his master, who beat him that day so that he often felt it afterwards. [Head:] Delivered to court on 4 February 1444.
