Addressed to John Atherley, mayor and escheator. Richard is the son and heir of Margaret, who was the wife of William Waldern , late citizen of London, and the daughter of John Clerk of London, ‘chaundeler’. [Tenants in chief not specified.]

Holdings

The jurors swear that he was born in the parish of St Benet Sherehog on the feast of St Faith [ 6 October ] 1412, and baptized in the church there, and was aged 30 on 5 October last. They know and recall this for the following reasons. William...ard [ms torn], aged 52 and more, had a great feast with John More, knight , Richard’s godfather, on the same day, when he was aged 22 and more. Thomas Grene , aged 53, broke his shin when jumping that day, when he was aged 23 and more. William Langton , aged 52, knows because his wife Alice died at the time of the baptism, when he was aged 22 and more. Nicholas Egremont , aged 54 and more, at the time of the baptism was captured by the king’s enemies the Scots, and was then aged 24. John Penrose , aged 66 and more, knows because Peter, his brother, died at the time of the baptism. Roger Lyn ‘draper’, aged 58 and more, had a ‘dun’ horse which at the time of the baptism fell in a great stank at Shoreditch and broke its neck. John Smyth , aged 51 and more, knows because his daughter Margaret was espoused to John Curteys , her husband, at the time of the baptism. John Kelyngham , aged 59 and more, knows because his brother Gilbert was captured with his wares that day by the king’s enemies. John Synet , aged 55, that day bought 100 ewes from John Holdefast of London, and within seven days they all died of murrain. Nicholas Brydde , aged 53, knows because the altar of St John the Baptist in the church was consecrated on the same day. Richard Garnon , aged 58 and more, knows because that day in the same church William Coldecok and Isabel his wife, Richard’s sister, were divorced. John Barkefold , aged 54 and more, knows because that day he and other neighbours bought the great bell of the church, called ‘sweet Maria of Shorehoge’.
