JOHN STAPILHULL , SON AND HEIR OF JOHN STAPILHULL

Holdings

The jurors swear that he was born at Higher Ashton (Assheton) and baptised in the church there, and is aged 21 and more. [Date of birth not specified.] They know and recall this for the following reasons. Thomas Butteshide , aged 52, was in the church on the day of the baptism, when his son William was buried at the church. Henry Merwode , aged 54, was in the church and saw John lifted from the font. He had a son called Geoffrey who was born on the same day and baptized in the church. Nicholas Coterell , aged 55, was in the church and saw John lifted from the font. Going home he fell on ice and broke his left shin. Robert Babecomb , aged 60, was in the church and saw John lifted from the font. His wife Katherine was buried in the cemetery of the church on the same day. John Jacob , aged 59, was in the church and offered for the soul of the above Katherine, and saw John lifted from the font. William Stonyng , aged 56, was in the church at the time of the baptism. His son Richard, who had taken holy orders as a priest, celebrated his first mass in the church on that day. Henry Beare , aged 57, knows because of the date of one part of a charter in his possession by which he enfeoffed John Myll of 1 a. land in Trusham. Roger Prous , aged 56, was in the church and after the baptism provided hot water in a silver basin for the parson of Higher Ashton , who was John’s godfather, to wash his hands. Thomas Hill, aged 53, was in the church and saw this parson give John 40s. John Begge , aged 59, held a candle in the church at the time of the baptism. Robert Kaynok , aged 57, was in the church and was godfather to a son of Henry Halle called Ellis, baptized there on the same day. John Prous of Chagford, aged 56, was in the church and offered for the soul of the above William [son of Thomas Butteshide ], and saw John raised from the font.
