AGNES, ONE OF THE DAUGHTERS AND HEIRS OF JOHN WALWEYN

Majority claimed by her husband, Thomas Welynton . By royal grant [CFR 1437–45, pp. 154, 163], the lands and tenements from her inheritance are in the custody of Walter Devereux , who is to be warned. [Dorse:] He was warned by John Monyngton , Hugh Carrwe , John Harpour , and Richard Wyn .

Holdings

The jurors swear that she was born at Wellington on Wednesday, the feast of St Ambrose [ 4 April ] 1427, n49 and baptized the same day in the church of St Margaret there, and is aged 14 and more. They recall this well and have full knowledge thereof for the following reasons. Thomas Monynton , aged 36 and more, saw Agnes Walsch and Borgea Berowe, godmothers of Agnes, lift her from the font. Hugh Brugge , aged 40 and more, was in the church that day and drank red wine at the church door with John Bagger , godfather of Agnes, after the baptism. William Hakeluyt , aged 50 and more, held a consecrated candle (cereum benedictum) at the baptism at the request of Agnes’s father. Thomas Hode of Leominster, aged 44 and more, stood by the font and saw how Walter Hamelyn held a book before the rector at the consecration of the font before the baptism. John Kyngeslane , aged 60 and more, delivered four torches of wax to burn by the font during the baptism, at the request of Agnes’s father. Thomas Alton , aged 39 and more, stood in the church and saw how William More, groom (valettus) of Agnes’s father, gave water to the godfather(s) and godmother(s) to wash their hands before they left the church. Thomas Partrich , aged 50 and more, was in the church and saw William Dethege carrying bread and two pots (ollas) full of sweet wine to give to men and women present at the baptism. Thomas Emyngehope , aged 60 and more, was in the church and saw Thomas Bagger , Agnes’s godfather, give her a purse and a gold ring. Richard Gardener , aged 50 and more, was in the cemetery of the church and saw Richard Rose , a servant of Thomas Bagger , fall from his horse and badly injure his left shin. Richard Body , aged 40 and more, was in the church and saw how the holy-water clerk broke the lamp before the high altar, and how the oil fell on his head. Thomas Spysor , aged 60 and more, was in the church and heard mass at the altar of the Virgin Mary after the baptism. John Hodde , aged 50 and more, was in the church and saw how the deacon covered the font after the baptism. [Head:] Delivered to court on 6 November.
