Holdings

He held no lands or tenements in demesne or in service of the king or of any other. Long before his death he was seised of the following in demesne as of fee. By indented charter dated at Bere Ferrers, 18 April 1440, shown to the jurors, he granted the manor among other things – described as all his manors, messuages, lands, tenements, reversions, rents, and services in this and other counties – to his son Roger Champernoun , and his heirs and assigns, so that Roger was seised in demesne as of fee.

Holdings

He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief in demesne or in service, but he held the following in demesne as of fee. The following free tenants held of Alexander , of the manor, at his death. The abbot of Sulby held a tenement and a virgate of land by homage, scutage, and rent of 2s. payable at the principal four terms, viz. Michaelmas, Christmas, Easter, and Midsummer; and a ⁿ⁰⁰⁸ messuage and 2 virgates of land in Thornby, by rent of 7s. 8d. payable at the same feasts and by knight service and suit to the court of Coton every three weeks. The following held by the following rents payable at the same feasts and by knight service and suit of court as above: Thomas Farewell held a messuage and ½ virgate of land [location not specified] by rent of 2s.; William Smyth held a messuage and 4 a. land in Ravensthorpe by rent of 2s.; William Benet held a messuage and ½ virgate of land [location not specified] by rent of 12d.; the heirs of Ives Fitzwaryn held a messuage and a virgate of land in Ravensthorpe by rent of 12d.; John Hakelton held a messuage and a virgate of land in Ravensthorpe by rent of 11s.; William Smyth held a messuage and ½ virgate of land in Ravensthorpe by rent of 15d.; and the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England held 3 virgates of land in Thornby by rent of 14d. Alice, late wife of Robert Worth , held certain lands and tenements in Coton and Ravensthorpe by rent of 8s. 3d. at the same feasts, and rent of 1 lb. cumin payable at Michaelmas and by knight service and suit of court as above. John Reve held a messuage and ½ virgate of land [location not specified] by rent of 5s. at the above terms and rent of 2 capons and by knight service and suit of court as above. William Bryton held a messuage and ½ virgate of land in Ravensthorpe by rent of 3s. at the same terms and by knight service and suit of court as above; and the manor of Teeton by rent of 1 lb. cumin at Michaelmas, by service of ¼ knight’s fee, and by suit of court as above. The prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England held certain lands and tenements in Hollowell by homage and scutage of 20s. when it runs at 20s., more when more and less when less. Elizabeth, the wife of Hugh Redell and the daughter and heir of William Could , held the manor of Thornby doing suit of court as above. John Scarburgh held a messuage and 2 virgates of land in Thornby by rent of 2s. at the above terms, by rent of 1 lb. pepper at Michaelmas, and by knight service and suit of court as above. The rector of Thornby held certain parcels (cert’ parcel’) of land there by rent of 14d. at the same terms, other services unknown. Henry Farewell held certain parcels of land there by the same rent and services; Thomas Piers of Thornby held certain parcels of land there by the same rent and services; and John Clerk held certain parcels of land there by the same rent and services. Margaret (Magota), who was the wife of Thomas Heyr , held certain parcels of land there by rent of 8d. at the same terms, other services unknown. The prior of Daventry held 2 messuages and 2 virgates of land in West Haddon and a virgate of land in Cold Ashby by rent of 12d. at Michaelmas and by knight service and suit of court as above. John Arnold held a messuage and a virgate of land in Cold Ashby by serving the said court and levying and collecting the amercements and profits. John Malory, esquire , held the manor of Winwick as ¼ knight’s fee and by suit of court as above. Robert Hauberk held a messuage and a carucate of land in Nortoft by rent of 13s. 4d. payable at the above terms and by knight service and suit of court as above.
