RICHARD BILSBY SON OF THOMAS BILSBY

LINCOLNSHIRE. Proof of age [indented]. Alford. 1 November 1441. [Waslyn].

The jurors were sworn and diligently examined on the age of Richard son of Thomas. They swear that Richard was born at Bilsby and baptised in the church of St Trinity there. He was aged 21 on Tuesday the feast of St Mark the Evangelist last [25 April]. John Norton , 50 and more, knows because, on the day of the birth, John Sparwe, chaplain , celebrated his first mass after ordination in the same church. Hervey Ratheby , 60 and more, knows because John Croft , Hervey’s kinsman, was buried in the churchyard there. William Bamburgh , 50 and more, knows because there was such a great wind that the belfry of North Cadeby fell to the ground. n448 Richard Ammery , 60 and more, knows because John de Thurleby hung himself. Nicholas Draper , 50 and more, knows because Robert Smyth set fire to his smithy. Thomas Godknape , 50 and more, knows because John Bowar accepted pilgrimage to St Thomas of Canterbury. William Adam , 60 and more, knows because Alice Bradepole ran away from her master. Thomas Harpour , 50 and more, knows because Robert Bekefeld threw himself from a bridge (in quodam ponte se ipsum emargebat). John Foston , 53 and more, knows because Roger Clerke had an accident with his horse and broke his shin. William Hatton , 60 and more, knows because Richard Hagh held the king’s court of his duchy of Lancaster at Bilsby. John Pape , 50 and more, knows because John att Stile stole a horse at Dalby for which he was hung. William Travers , 50 and more, knows because William Martyn was married at the church of St Peter of Markby.
