475 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 4 February 1441. [Bate].

Regarding his inheritance as brother and heir of William Parles brother and heir of Ralph son of Walter Parles of Watford son of Ralph Parles, esquire , who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. William and Ralph, son, lately died while minors in the king’s wardship. The lands and tenements are in the custody of William Tresham , still living, to whom and to Thomas Billyng and Thomas Compworth , both now deceased, they were committed by ‪ Henry V by letters patent [CPR 1416–22, p. 308]. Have William informed of the forthcoming proof of age.

The jurors swear separately that John Parles was born on 1 October 7 Henry V [1419] at Watford and baptised in the church of St Peter there. They well know and recollect this for the following reasons, and thus swear that John Parles was aged 21 years on 1 October last. John Cranesley , 60 and more, carried a waxen candle before John Parles at his baptism. Richard Holwell , 56 and more, carried a towel around his neck. Thomas Burgeys , 49 and more, carried a silver basin. William Wright , 62 and more, knows because his house caught fire immediately after the baptism. John Hykman , 46 and more, carried water to extinguish the said fire after the baptism. Thomas Smyth , 55 and more, saw his wife carry John Parles to the church. Henry Bray , 46 and more, rode for the godfathers of John Parles on the same day. Richard Hyde , 48 and more, rang the bells discordantly (pulsavit campanas contrarie) in the church belfry because of the fire at William Wright ’s house. Henry Humme , 60 and more, rode, on the same day, for the vicar of the church to baptise John. John Wright , 50 and more, knows because his wife gave birth to his first-born son on the same day. Thomas Bramcote , 44 and more, saw his wife carrying John Wright ’s son to the church to be baptised on the same day after the baptism of John Parles. John Modery , 48 and more, was asked in the church by John Wright , during the baptism of John Parles, to be godfather to his son.
