Holdings
She held the following ?[in dower] from the inheritance of Richard Salkeld , son of Thomas Salkeld , son of Thomas Salkeld , son of Richard Salkeld , lately husband of Katherine, with [?reversion] after her death to the right heirs of Richard Salkeld, lately her husband.
Great Corby, the manor, held of the king in chief by homage andfealty. There is a capital messuage with a tower and other houses, and demesne lands and meadows, worth 40s. yearly; a park, its herbage worth 6s. 8d. yearly; 10 messuages, each worth 4s. yearly, and 4 cottages, each worth 30d. yearly, held by tenants-at-will; 5 messuages, worth nothing yearly because they lie wasted and cannot be demised; 2 mills for grain, one worth 33s. 4d. yearly, and the other worth 20s. yearly; a fulling-mill, worth 6s. 8d. yearly; a place called Bridge End with a messuage, worth 4s. yearly, and 3 cottages, each worth 18d. yearly; a fishery in the Eden, worth nothing this year viz., for the time of the current escheator’s account because the stank of Wetheral is fractured by violent floods at the head of the fishery where the fish are usually slowed and caught; 300 a. moor, worth nothing yearly because common pasture for all the tenants in the vills of Great Corby and Bridge End; and 200 a. wood, its herbage worth nothing yearly, and the wood worth nothing yearly because there is no wood to be felled there.
Little Corby, a messuage called Longthwaite, worth 13s. 4d. yearly.
Aglionby, a cottage, worth 2s. yearly. Of whom it is held is unknown.
There were various heriots due in Great Corby, viz., one cow, price 5s., for Thomas Wilson ’s heriot; one cow, [price 5s.], for... Stork’s heriot; one cow, price 5s., for John Vaux ’s heriot; and one cow, price 5s., for Thomas Jonson ’s heriot.
George Warwyk , who was placed exigent at the suit of the king for felony had 4 cows, price 20s..... Thomas Salkeld held the following on the day of his death...., 3 messuages with..., each messuage worth 4s. yearly, held by homage and fealty. Little Corby, 4 messuages, each worth 5s. yearly, and 2 cottages, each worth 8d. yearly. The messuages and cottages in Little Corby are burdened with 20s. annual rent, payable to Isabel, lately wife of Ralph Salkeld , still living, for life, taken at Martinmas and Pentecost equally. It was granted to Isabel by Thomas Salkeld by charter, shown to the jurors, and is deducted from the sum-totals of all the lands and tenements in Little Corby.

Thomas died on 2 November 1438. Richard Salkeld, junior , is son and heir of Thomas Salkeld, and kin and heir of Richard Salkeld, lately husband of Katherine. He was aged 15 on 29 September last. Katherine died on 13 November 1438.

[Dorse:] Memorandum that an inquisition, the tenor of this one, was sent to Chancery, by virtue of the king’s writ under the great seal directed to his treasurer and barons of the Exchequer. The writ was enrolled among the writs directed to the barons for the Easter term 27 ‪Henry VI [1449], roll 7.

She held the manor of Great Corby for life by demise of Gilbert Groute, chaplain , and John Lancastre, chaplain , to Katherine and Richard Salkeld, lately her husband, and to the heirs of Richard, with reversion to Richard Salkeld , kin and heir of Richard Salkeld, viz., son of Thomas son of Thomas son of Richard.n336 Royal licence was previously obtained.n337
Great Corby, the manor, held of the king in chief as 1/2 knight’s fee. There are 50 a. demesne lands, each acre worth 3d. yearly; 5 a. demesne meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 3 small closes, each worth 40d. yearly; a watermill for grain, worth 20s. yearly; 2 fulling-mills, worth 6s. 8d. yearly;n338 40 a. wood, worth 40d. yearly; 100 a. pasture, worth nothing yearly because all the neighbours of the locality have rights of common with their animals there; a fishery in the Eden, worth 40d. yearly; various free tenants who render 1lb cumin between them at Pentecost and Martinmas equally; 13 husband-lands, each worth 3s. yearly; and 8 cottages, each worth 14d. yearly. There are no more nor other profits to be taken in the manor.

She died on 15 November 1438. Richard son of Thomas Salkeld is kin and next heir of Richard Salkeld, her former husband, and aged 15 and more.

Christine, lately wife of Thomas Salkeld , held and occupied the 50 a. demesne land, 5 a. meadow, and 3 small closes, for a whole year after Katherine’s death by demise of the same. After that year and until the day of this inquisition, Walter Stirkland, lately escheator , occupied the same land, meadow, and closes, and he also occupied the rest of the manor from the time of Katherine’s death until the day of this inquisition, and took the issues, title unknown.
