John Dalton, chevalier , was seised of the following in demesne as of fee.
Apethorpe, £39 19s. rent, payable at Easter and Michaelmas equally, held of the king in chief by knight service.
A fine was levied at Westminster on the morrow of St John the Baptist 1402 [CP 25/1/179/90, no. 25], before William Thirnyng , William Rykhill , John Markham , William Hankeford , and William Brenchesle , justices, and others, between Roger Thomlynson of Bispham and William Grenehirst, querents , and John Dalton, chevalier , and Isabel his wife, deforciants, regarding the rent in Apethorpe. John Dalton recognised the rent to be the right of Roger and William as held by grant of John. Roger and William then granted the rent to John Dalton and Isabel for their lives, to hold of the king and his heirs by due service, with successive remainders to Roger Dalton , named in the writ, described as Roger son of John and Isabel, for life; to the heirs of the bodies of John and Isabel; to the heirs of the body of Roger son of John; to the heirs of the body of John;n040 and to the right heirs of John. One part of the fine was shown to the jurors, and royal licence was obtained [CPR 1401–1405, p. 106]. John Dalton, chevalier , and Isabel his wife had issue of their bodies: Richard Dalton , still living. John Dalton, chevalier , died. Isabel survived him and was seised of the rent by virtue of the fine. She died so seised. Roger son of John and Isabel was afterwards seised in demesne as of free tenement by virtue of the fine and remainder, and died seised of this estate. The rent remains and should remain to Richard Dalton , as son and heir of the bodies of John Dalton and Isabel. Roger son of John and Isabel, named in the fine, and Roger Dalton , named in the writ, are one and the same. He is known by both names. Roger Dalton was a bastard.

He had issue: Robert, and died on 12 October last. Robert son of Roger is next heir of Roger, and aged 5 years and more. Richard Dalton son of John and Isabel was aged 40 years and more on the feast of St Stephen the Martyr last [2 August].
