She held no lands or tenements in demesne as of fee of the king in chief, or any other, in fee simple, fee tail, or in service. Arnold Sauage, knight, senior , was lately seised of the following manors in demesne as of fee. He granted the manors to Arnold Sauage, knight , named in the writ, and to Katherine. The manors were wholly to revert to the right heirs of Arnold Sauage, senior , but the manor of Tracy was granted to Arnold and Katherine, and to the heirs of Katherine by Arnold son of Arnold; and the manor of Shorne was granted to them for their lives. Royal licence was obtained by letters patent dated at Windsor on 23 April 1399 [CPR 1396–99, p. 571], shown to the jurors, in which Arnold, named in the writ, is described as Arnold Sauage, esquire , his son, and Katherine is described as Katherine Scalys , as she was then single. Arnold and Katherine were thus seised of the manor of Tracy in demesne as of fee tail, and the manor of Shorne in demesne as of free tenement. Arnold and Katherine afterwards married. Arnold Sauage, senior , died and reversion of the manors descended to Arnold son of Arnold, as his son and heir. Arnold son of Arnold then granted the manors to William Bardolf, knight , Simon Felbrig, knight , Thomas Erpyngham, knight , Edmund Thorp, knight , Thomas Brounflete, knight , Edmund Oldehalle , William Cheyne of Sussex, Thomas Appuldrefeld , John and Thomas Seyntleger sons of the lord Arnold Seyntleger, knight , Alexander Cheyne , John son of Richard Cheyne of Sheppey, Henry Burton , William atte Court , and William Sprot, clerk , and their heirs and assigns. The grant was made by his charter dated on 14 September 1413, shown to the jurors. William, Simon etc. [as above] were thus seised of the manors in demesne as of fee. Arnold son of Arnold afterwards died without heir of his body by Katherine. Katherine survived him and, after his death, she brought the king’s writ of entry cui in vita against William, Simon etc. [as above], regarding the manors of Shorne and Tracy. The writ was addressed to the sheriff of Kent, and returnable on the octave of St John the Baptist 1421 before Robert Hulle and his associates, justices of the King’s Bench. The case was adjourned until the following octave of Martinmas when judgement was given by the court that, by virtue of the writ, Katherine should recover her seisin from William, Simon etc. [as above], by default of the same. Katherine then proceeded against William, Simon etc. [as above] by authority of the recovery and obtained it. She was thus seised of the manors in form as above, and died seised of this estate.
