Holdings

Roger de Mortuo Mari , lately earl of March and Ulster, was seised of the manor of Gussage St Michael in demesne as of fee. Thus seised and by his indented charter dated at London on 1 August 1394, shown to the jurors, he granted the manor, described as the manor of Gussage St Michael, to Edmund de Mortuo Mari , described as Edmund de Mortuo Mari, his brother, and the heirs of his body, to hold of Roger and his heirs by scutage and as a knight’s fee. The grant was made on the following conditions: if Edmund should die without heir of his body, then Roger and his heirs may re-enter the manor in their previous estate, the enfeoffment notwithstanding; and if Edmund or his heirs should make a grant which discontinues the entail in the manor, or in any parcel of the same, or if, by deed or fine with guarantee, they make any grant from the manor, or any parcel of the same, by which it is possible to exclude Roger or his heirs should Edmund die without heir of his body, then it is permitted for Roger and his heirs to re-enter the manor immediately the guarantee or discontinuation is made, and hold it as in their first estate, the enfeoffment notwithstanding. Edmund was thus seised in demesne as of fee tail of the manor, and continued in this estate until 22 June 1402. He died without heir of his body and the manor reverted to Edmund, lately earl of March , as son and heir of Roger, late earl . Edmund, late earl , died seised in demesne as of fee and, after his death, the manor descended to Richard, now duke of York , kin and heir of Edmund, late earl , as son of Anne his sister.
