JOHN, SON OF THOMAS, SON OF THOMAS FOULESHURST

Regarding his inheritance as son and heir of Thomas, son and heir of Thomas Fouleshurst , deceased, who held of ‪ Henry IV in chief. Thomas the son was lately a minor who died in the wardship of Henry V . The lands are in the custody of Roger Venables, parson of Rostherne , and Henry de Ravenscroft , farmers of the same, so it is said, by commission of ‪ Henry V [CPR 1416–22, p. 168]. Inform them of the forthcoming proof of age. [Dorse:] Roger and Henry were informed. Place of proof given.

The jurors swear that John was born at Cressage, baptised in the church there, and was 21 on Monday 20 June last. William Poynour , 46 and more, knows because he was godfather. Philip Yong , 46 and more, knows because he carried a waxen torch to the church, and stayed there while John was baptised. William Coton , 50 and more, knows because he carried a towel to the church to dry the godfathers’ and godmother’s hands. Richard Husee , 43 and more, knows because he carried a basin to the church in which the godfather and godmother might wash their hands. John Paternoster , 70 and more, knows because he raised a grange in Cressage on the same day. Thomas Clerk , of Much Wenlock, 51 and more, knows because he was in the church for mass on the same day and heard John’s most frequent crying caused by the cold water. Edmund Lowe , 44 and more, knows because Joan, his sister, carried water to the church for John’s baptism. John Suell , 62 and more, knows because he came to Cressage on the same day to talk to John’s father and saw very many men and wives going to the church see John’s baptism. William Kynnesley , 64 and more, knows because John, his first-born son, was baptised in the church of Cound by Cressage on the same day. Richard Parlour , 63 and more, knows because Margery his wife cried like an owl (tutubavit) and broke her right shin while going to Cressage church to see John baptised. John Purye , 49 and more, knows because Katherine his mother was buried in the church of Cound by Cressage on the same day. William Wynnesbury , 64 and more, knows because on the same day he rode through Cressage towards Shrewsbury and saw very many men and wives going from the church, with John, to his father’s house.
