Holdings

He held the following in his demesne as of fee on 13 January 1422, long before his death. Appleby, 2 messuages and a bovate of land, of the king in chief by service of 1/20 knight’s fee, annual value 10s.; and 2 messuages and a bovate of land, of the prior of Thornholme by service of 3s. yearly for all service, annual value 10s. Appleby, a bovate of land and 16 a. meadow, and Risby, a messuage and 4 a. land, of the same prior by service of 3d. yearly for all service, annual value 6s. 8d. Appleby, a messuage, bovate of land and 12 a. meadow, then in the tenure of Thomas Fleme, a cottage called ‘Wallyng Place’, and 4 a. land, lately those of Thomas Arneys and Geoffrey Barker of Thorneton. Described as John Cameryng of Appleby and by his charter he granted the above – except the messuage and lands belonging to it in the tenure of Thomas Fleme and 4 a. land lately those of Thomas Arneys and Geoffrey Barker – described as all the lands, tenements, meadows, pastures, rents, reversions and services that he had the day the charter was made in the vills and territories of Appleby, Great and Little Risby with the above exception – to John Harald of Thornholme, esquire , John Plowthmaister and John Meryman both of Appleby, and their heirs, holding of the chief lords of the fees by the services due and customary of right. They were seised in their demesne as of fee. By their indented charter, the part sealed with their seals shown to the jurors, they re-granted the messuages, land and meadow in Appleby and Risby held of the king and prior – described as all lands, tenements, meadows, rents and services which they had by enfeoffment of John in the vill and territory of Appleby – to John for life without impeachment of waste or distraint, successive remainders to the following, holding as above: Margaret his daughter and the heirs of her body; Katherine her sister and the heirs of her body; Agnes her sister and the heirs of her body; and to the right heirs of John Cameryng . He was seised in his demesne as of free tenement. At his death he held for life with remainder to Margaret as above. The feoffees re-granted the residual lands and tenements except the above holding – described as all their lands and tenements in Great and Little Risby which they had by enfeoffment of John with all other lands and tenements in Appleby – to the same Margaret and the heirs of her body, holding as above, with successive remainders as above. Margaret was seised in her demesne as of fee tail and continued in this estate throughout her father’s life. He held the following in his demesne as of fee.

South Ferriby, a messuage, toft and 1 1/2 bovates of land, held of the heirs of Philip Kydale of South Ferriby, service unknown, annual value 3s. 4d.
Winterton, 2 cottages and a bovate of land, of the abbot of the monastery of St Mary ’s, York, service unknown, annual value 5s.
Appleby, a messuage, bovate of land and 12 a. meadow, of John Langton, knight , service unknown, annual value 8s.

He died on 31 January last. Agnes, now wife of Robert Proketour of Barton upon Humber (Berton), Margaret, now wife of Simon Elkyngton of Grimsby, and Katherine, now wife of John Traue of Kirton in Lindsey (Kyrton), are his daughters and next heirs, aged 40 years and more, 31 years and more and 28 years and more respectively.
