AGNES WHO WAS WIFE OF WILLIAM PAYN

Holdings

She held no lands or tenements of the king in demesne or service. William Payn , lately her husband, was seised in his demesne as of fee of the following.

East Lulworth, a messuage, worth nothing yearly, 100 a. land, each acre worth 4d. yearly, 1/2 a. meadow, worth 20d. yearly, and 40 a. hilly land, each acre worth 2d. yearly. They are held of Richard, duke of York , in the king’s wardship, of his manor of Marshwood by service of 1/10 knight’s fee.
Gatemerston, a messuage, worth nothing yearly, and a carucate of land, worth 26s. 8d. yearly, held, as is said, of John Neuburgh, esquire, senior , by service of 1/10 knight’s fee, of his manor of Winfrith Newburgh.
Described as William Payn of East Lulworth and by his charter dated at East Lulworth on 30 January 1411 and shown to the jurors, he granted these, described as his manor of East Lulworth with all lands, tenements, pastures, rents, services and reversions in East Lulworth and Gatemerston, to John Touker, vicar of East Lulworth , and Robert Russe, chaplain , and their heirs and assigns. They were seised, and by their charter shown to the jurors, they re-granted these, described as all their lands and tenements in the buildings, curtilages, gardens, closes, lands, meadows, pastures and rights in East Lulworth and Gatemerston, to William Payn and Agnes his wife and his heirs. William and Agnes were seised, William in his demesne as of fee and Agnes in her demesne as of free tenement. William and subsequently Agnes died seised of these estates. William was formerly seised in his demesne as of fee of the following.
Winfrith Newburgh, 6 messuages: one held of the same John Neuburgh by service of 3s. to him and his heirs at Michaelmas for all service, annual value 40d.; the remaining 5 messuages held, as is said, of the abbot of Cerne , service unknown, annual value 10s.
West Burton, a messuage, held of the same John Neuburgh by service of a pair of gloves or 1d. at Michaelmas to him and his heirs for all service, annual value 40d.
Wareham, a burgage, held of the same duke of York by service of 3d. at Michaelmas to him and his heirs for all service, annual value 12d.
Described as William Payn of East Lulworth and by another charter, sealed with his seal and shown to the jurors, he granted these, described as all lands, tenements and reversions in Winfrith Newburgh, West Burton and Wareham, to Robert Russe, chaplain , and John Touker, chaplain , and their heirs and assigns. Robert and John were seised in their demesne as of fee and by their charter they re-granted these to William and Agnes and William’s heirs. William and Agnes were seised, William in his demesne as of fee and Agnes in her demesne as of free tenement. William and subsequently Agnes died seised of these estates.

She died on 29 May 1430. Walter Payn is the son and heir of William and Agnes, aged 22 years and more.

The king has taken the issues and profits from the lands and tenements held of the duke by knight service since her death until the day of this inquisition, while John Neuburgh has taken the issues and profits from those held of him.
